Fresno based drummer Brian Hamada, a member of the contemporary jazz quintet "bug," joins us in-studio to talk about the release of their new CD "The Gadlfy" on Seattle's Origin Records. The group has several Fresno connections, including Hamada, and former Fresno State jazz band director and pianist James Miley. "bug" also features saxophonist Peter Epstein, guitarist Jeff Miley and bassist Roger Shew. Saxophonist Ted Nash has traveled the world several times over as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra since 1998. Led by Wynton Marsalis, the prestigious big band comes to the San Joaquin Valley for a performance at the Turlock Community Theatre on Thursday September 24th at 7:30 PM. We recently spoke with Ted from Banff, Alberta, where he is performing with the JALCO. We'll find out what's it's like working for Wynton Marsalis, and playing in one of the most well known jazz groups in the world. On Wednesday July 29th, 2009 Les Nunes, local jazz trombonist and leader of the group the Fresno Urban Jazz Experience joined us live in-studio to talk about his new group. The band just got back from a European tour, which had them playing in a number of prestigious German jazz venues, as well as a featured spot at the WDR Musik Fest 09 in Munster (Fresno's sister city). The band fuses jazz, funk, latin, reggae and even hip-hop influences into a unique sound that represents the diversity of the Valley. It features Les Nunes (trombone); Gene Doi (saxophone); Nathan Johnson (trumpet); Ron DeLarm (guitar); Marco Tulio Rodriguez (keyboards); Adan Infante (bass); George Ramirez (drums); and Aaron Wall (percussion/mc). Buchanan High School graduates and twin brothers Sean Richey (guitar) and Justin Richey (bass) are back in town this summer, and stopped by the 90.7 KFSR studios for an interview and in-studio performance. They're attending the the Manhattan School of Music and the Berklee College of Music respectively, and they're among the top young jazz musicians to come out of the Fresno area.

Former Fresno based jazz artists Jimmy Emerzian (saxophone) and Richard Giddens (bass) joined 90.7 KFSR's Joe Moore in-studio for a live interview and performance. The two are performing a rare Fresno show, along with David Aus (piano) and Brian Hamada (drums) at Milano Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria (1243 Fulton Mall between Fresno Street and Merced) on Thursday Night June 4th from 7:00 PM till 10:00 PM. Interview with latin jazz artist Dave Samuels
Dave Samuels is arguably the premier vibraphonist in latin jazz today. The founder of the Caribbean Jazz Project, Samuels, Dave is also a former member of Spyro Gyra and Double Image, and has worked with everyone from Frank Zappa to Gerry Mulligan. His current CD "Afro-Bop Alliance" is a latin jazz big band album, and is latin jazz GRAMMY nominee. In October, Dave visited the 90.7 KFSR studios for an interview with Steve Alcala.

Woody's tenure on the air in Fresno dates back to the early 1950's, though he is best known for the innovative AM station KLIP, which in the 60's and 70's was the only radio station in Fresno playing jazz and soul. 90.7 KFSR interview: Loren Pickford - 08/01/07
One of Fresno's leading jazz artists of the 1970's and 1980's, Loren played with Jackie Wilson, Ray Charles, T-Bone Walker, Chet Baker, Frank Rosolino, Billy Higgins and many others. He was part of a vital jazz scene in Fresno's Tower District, which featured players like Don Weed, George Roessler, Bill Bixler and many others. He resettled in New Orleans in the early 1990's and lived there until Hurricane Katrina struck, destroying nearly everything he owned. Loren now lives in Kansas City. The winner of 7 GRAMMY awards, pianist and band leader
Eddie Palmieri is one of the biggest names in Latin Jazz, and is now
celebrating his 50th year in the music business. His ensembles have
been some of the most influential in the history of Latin Jazz, and his
percussive piano playing, has caused many to dub him as "the Latin
Thelonious Monk". In May 2005, Eddie brought his band to Fresno's Arte
Americas for a performance as part of the Nights in the Plaza
series. We had a chance to talk with Eddie about his career and music,
and where he's headed next.

living legends of jazz, and has a new album celebrating the bebop music

and about his long career as a leader and sideman with the likes of

Marsalis quartet, and he now has his own debut recording as a leader,

Eric about his new cd, growing up in Fresno, and much more in this hour

Denny
Zeitlin is one of the finest pianists in jazz, but his day job isn't
playing music, it's as a professional psychiatrist, and as a professor
of psychiatry at UC Berkeley. Denny's lyrical touch and love for the
trio format often brings to mind the music of Bill Evans, yet Denny's
own voice is a strong and distinct one. In this hour long program,
we'll hear selections from Denny's new MaxJazz release Slickrock, featuring
Buster Williams and Matt Wilson. We'll talk about Denny's long career
in jazz and psychiatry, and the fascinating relationships between the
two.
