FAQs Regarding W classes

If you are tying to get into a “W” class, there are a few FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) you need to consider:

Question: Is there any hope for me?
Yes. The university offers many other W classes that often have openings. Although such courses may not fulfill all the general education requirements you are seeking, they will fulfill the W requirement. You can ask your advisor to help you find other W courses you can take.

Question: Can I get out of taking a W class?
Yes.  Just take and pass the Upper Division Writing Exam.  It costs $30 and is given 3 times per year, on a Saturday in October, January, and March.  Contact the Office of Testing Services for more information at 559-278-2457 or go to their office at FFS 110.

Question: If there are seats left in the classroom, can I get in?
27 students are the maximum number of students allowed per W class.  This is a rule determined by the Dean of Undergraduate Studies.  When this course was designed, this was part of the agreement, so that intensive time could be spent with each student on their writing.  Therefore, empty chairs in a classroom do not imply available space.

Question: Why are the W classes always full?
Because individuals do not consider taking the writing test and because students do not plan ahead and sign up for this course on the first opportunity to do so (Junior year).

Question: Is there a waiting list if the class is full?
Not Really.  Some instructors may be willing to take names for an informal waiting list, but there is no guarantee that you will be able to get into the class on that basis. With on-line registration, it’s best to keep trying to get in—if a place opens up, the first person to register will get in.

Should I attend the class the first class as an uninvited student?
No.  Sitting in on the first night will only confuse matters and will not increase a teacher’s likelihood of letting you in.  Again, on-line registration is more important than the instructor's opinion.

Question: What is “I am a graduating senior”?
Some students have resorted to providing proof that they are graduating that very semester as a means of getting into a course.  Although this can be easily done, because all graduating seniors much pay (and receive a receipt) for graduation prior to the first day of the semester, this will not ensure your acceptance into a particular section of a class.  In fact, an instructor should defer to the 27 person cap in such a situation.
