Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) Test Requirement

Undergraduate students who are subject to the 1983-84 or later campus catalog must take the Entry Level Math (ELM) test before enrolling in a course that satisfies the General Education Core Requirement in Quantitative Reasoning. Failure to take the ELM will result in the student's registration being withheld. Students should check the test schedule to assure testing will be completed in time for registration. Exemptions from the test are given only to those students who can present proof of one of the following:

  • a score of 550 or above on the mathematics section of either the College Board SAT or SAT I: Reasoning Test
  • a score of 550 or above on Level I, IC, II, or IIC (C=Calculator) of either the College Board Mathematics Achievement Test or SAT II: Mathematics Test
  • a score of 23 or above on the ACT Mathematics Test taken October 1989 or later; a score of 24 or above if taken before October 1989
  • a score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Calculus AB, Calculus BC, or Statistics examinations
  • for transfer students, completion and transfer to the CSU of a college course that satisfies the requirement in Quantitative Reasoning, provided such a course was completed with a grade of "C" or better

Students who have not received a passing score of 50 or higher on the ELM will not be permitted to enroll in courses which meet the General Education Foundation Requirement in Quantitative Reasoning. They must record a "C" or better in a college taught Intermediate Algebra course. The Learning Resource Center and the Mathematics Department offer options for preparing for the ELM.

Please note that passing a college-taught Intermediate Algebra class Fall 1988 or thereafter does NOT exempt one from the ELM.
