Dance team and cheer team combine to become the
spirit squad
By Maggie Thach
Fans might have a hard time finding a dancer or cheerleader
at Bulldog Stadium or the Save Mart Center next year. That’s
because for the first time, both the dance team and the cheerleading
squad will be combined to form one “spirit
squad." “ We have two goals in mind with the forming
of the spirit squad,” Teena Shields, interim spirit squad
director, said. “We
want to be one cohesive unit and maintain fan involvement, and
we want to maximize our budget.”More>>
Farewell Column: Simple Text
By Joshua D. Scroggin
In an attempt to keep it fresh, this column has gone through many
incarnations. And even though it’s time to say goodbye, this
columnist is proud to say he’s going out by doing something
he’s
never done before—capsules. I went from Josh to The Spectator,
then Simpletext. Now I am Josh-tradamus. I’m going to tell
you what stories will make the biggest news in Fresno State sports

No one goes to Utah to listen to jazz music. It’s more likely,
in fact, that if you go to Utah, you’re
going to be listening to two young men on bikes wearing suits telling
you about Joseph Smith. But Utah’s NBA basketball team is still
called the Jazz. It’s one of many examples of teams having
names that just don’t add up. It made sense up until 25 years
ago, when the Jazz moved from New Orleans to Utah. There’s
jazz in New Orleans. The city is well known for its jazz music. It’s
also true, however, that “The Saints Go Marching
In” in New Orleans. So it makes sense that New Orleans’ football
team is the Saints.More>>

Quite a bit has happened at Fresno State in the school year that’s
about to end. There are those incidents to be proud of—and
those to be not-so-proud of. Plus, on a day The Collegian is going
to provide you with an opinion on what will happen next year, there
should be an opinion on what
has already happened this year. Right? So here’s what to be
proud of, and what not to be. • Be proud of the Fresno State
football team for finally beating high-and-mighty UCLA. The Bulldogs
were 0-6 all-time against
a Bruins team that has never played in Fresno before beating UCLA
17-9 in the Fresno State Invitational (also known as the Silicon
Valley Football Classic) in San Jose.More>>
