Cheer tryouts bring in change

Dance team and cheer team combine to become the spirit squad

Fans might have a hard time finding a dancer or cheerleader at Bulldog Stadium or the Save Mart Center next year. That’s because for the first time, both the dance team and the cheerleading squad will be combined to form one “spirit squad." “ We have two goals in mind with the forming of the spirit squad,” Teena Shields, interim spirit squad director, said. “We want to be one cohesive unit and maintain fan involvement, and we want to maximize our budget.”More>>

Farewell Column: Simple Text

In an attempt to keep it fresh, this column has gone through many incarnations. Becky Belman, a senior at Clovis High School, was one of about 50 people trying out for next year’s cheer team. During warm-ups, Belman practices her routine with a group of friends.

Plus, on a day The Collegian is going to provide you with an opinion on what will happen next year, there should be an opinion on what has already happened this year. Right? So here’s what to be proud of, and what not to be. • Be proud of the Fresno State football team for finally beating high-and-mighty UCLA. The Bulldogs were 0-6 all-time against a Bruins team that has never played in Fresno before beating UCLA 17-9 in the Fresno State Invitational (also known as the Silicon Valley Football Classic) in San Jose.More>>
