Friends of Fresno State Report

FROM OUR PRESIDENT

"For nearly 100 years, Fresno State has produced citizens who have shaped and grown our region. Our commitment to providing an outstanding educational experience, combined with our nationally renowned service-learning and community engagement program, produces graduates ready to work and ready to serve their communities."

John D. Welty, President

Report received from Friends of Fresno State

I have received the report, “Blending Academics, Community Engagement, and Athletics in the University,” from the Friends of Fresno State community group and sincerely thank them for their interest and effort in this undertaking. It is available for reading at the Noll Associates Web site. Their report and the university’s recently concluded alumni attitude survey will provide information that will be helpful for us.

I have appointed a university committee to carefully consider how we can use this new information to enhance the efforts already under way on our campus to best serve our students and the region. Associate Provost Dr. Ellen Junn will chair this 14-member committee, which is asked to complete its work by March 2, 2009.

The committee consists of:

  • Chair - Ellen Junn, Associate Provost
  • Deborah Adishian-Astone, Associate Vice President, Auxiliary Operations and Enterprise Development
  • Shirley Melikian Armbruster, Associate Vice President, University Communications
  • Michael Botwin, Professor, Psychology and Chair of the Academic Senate
  • Jose Diaz, Associate Dean, College of Arts and Humanities
  • Betsy Hays, Assistant Professor, Mass Communications and Journalism
  • Katie Johnson, Director of Marketing and Outreach, Fresno State Alumni Association
  • Paul Ladwig, Associate Athletics Director
  • Peter McDonald, Dean, Henry Madden Library
  • Tamyra Pierce, Professor, Mass Communications and Journalism
  • Sally Ramage, Director, University Student Union and Student Involvement
  • Ganesan Srinivasan, Director, University Agricultural Laboratory
  • Jill Wagner, Director of Campaign Communications
  • Lynnette Zelezny, Associate Dean, Craig School of Business

My charge to the committee is:

  1. Review the Friends of Fresno State report and in particular the best practices identified in the report and advise the President on the steps which might be taken to strengthen the University's communication with its constituencies to further enrich and inform the public of the significant and noteworthy academic, athletic, cultural and scientific achievements of the faculty, students, staff and administrators at Fresno State. Recognizing that not all actions can be taken immediately, please recommend those steps which should be given initial priority. Also, identify those best practices which the University is already following which should be continued.
  2. In conjunction with the FOFS Report, review, analyze and incorporate data from other recent relevant campus surveys including the CSU Alumni Attitude Survey on Fresno State, as well as data from the recent Academic Affairs survey of faculty and current students on campus.
  3. Identify any other recommendations which should be considered to improve the University's communication with its publics.
  4. The group is asked to complete its work by March 2, 2009.
