About campus recycling

Recycling services are provided by Plant Operations. Two recycling specialists follow a weekly schedule to pick-up and transport recyclables from containers located inside and out of buildings to the outdoor recycling center.

What gets recycled?

Bottles (plastic and glass), cans, paper and cardboard. Most other materials are handled through normal trash pick-up. Recycling specialists pick up what is inside collection bins. If you need extra service because of an office clean out, a special event, or an unusual amount of recyclables, submit a work order at 278-2373.

Service areas

  • All campus buildings are on a weekly pick up schedule.
  • The outdoor recycling center is located on Barstow Avenue (between Maple and Chestnut Avenue) and can accept paper, plastic, bottles and cans, and glass containers. Businesa hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The recycling program coordinates:

  • The handling of recyclable materials with outside vendor(s)
  • Campus Waste Diversion Annual Report

Local California Conservation Corps (LCC) partners
with Fresno State

California Local Conservation Corps booth at 2007 Vintage DaysThe Local Conservation Corps (LLC) is assisting Fresno State in meeting State mandated recycling goals by collecting recyclable items from the blue and white recycling bins. They collect bottles, cans and paper on a weekly basis. The University receives recycling credit for the amounts collected and the LCC receives the recycling revenue from the bottles, cans and paper. The revenue is used to help cover their expenses.

Participate in campus recycling by using the blue and white recycling bins whenever possible. They are located throughout the campus and in some parking lots. It helps the campus and it helps the LCC.

Assembly Bill (AB) 75 Waste Diversion

Assembly Bill 75 was passed in 1999 and mandated that State agencies develop and implement an integrated waste management plan.  The changes brought about by AB 75 require each State agency or large State facility (State universities, community colleges, prisons within the Department of Corrections, facilities of the Department of Transportation, and any other agencies identified by the California Integrated Waste Management Board) to develop an integrated waste management plan by July 1, 2000; to divert at least 25 percent of its solid waste from landfills or transformation facilities by January 1, 2002; and to divert 50 percent by January 1, 2004.    The university is also required to submit an annual report on the previous year’s diversion amounts and activities by April 1 on each subsequent year.  Additional information can be found at:

Assembly Bill (AB) 2176  The Venues and Events Waste Reduction Law

On October 29, 2004 Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB 2716 regarding waste reduction at large venues and events.  This law requires the largest venue facilities and events in each city and county to begin planning for solid waste reduction, and annually report the progress of their recycling and waste reduction programs.  The university is covered under the mandates of AB 2176 for events that attract more than 2,000 individuals and charge an admission fee.  Football games and Save Mart Center events meet the definition of a large event and are subject to the mandates of AB 2176.  Additional information can be found at:
