The Lao Student Association (LSA) was created in October 1988.
Their mission is to help and support Laotian students and to encourage rapport among the Laotian community.
Their goal is for Laotian students to participate in various cultural events and promote heritage pride.
Cultural events like the Asian Refugee Forum Day are just one example in which the LSA has been involved.
This type of exposure advocates communal unity among Laotian students and elders.
Benefits of being a member are participation in their traditional dances, in the Laotian Heritage Night, planning of the Educational Conference, and other fun activities that the club creates.
Members also experience leadership skills, discover the importance of their heritage and build networking relationships.
The club’s advisor is Dr. Katsuyo Howard. The officers are Lany Sivongsay, President; Keenoi Nachampasak, Vice-President; Dary Boualamsy, Secretary; Ni Phimphisane, Treasurer; Toon Mek, Public Relations; and Sakhone Kansaath and Villi Chansavath, Activity Directors.
“The LSA has been working very hard to accomplish their vision and commitment this year,” said Howard. “One of their goals was the Laotian Recruitment Educational Conference which was held on Feb. 17.
“They were able to bring their community to our campus and share some of the educational issues and learned how to educate their youngsters for higher education. It was a very successful event.
“I am pleased to see that so many parents, community leaders and students attended this conference. They demonstrated excellent leadership skills as a team. I am very proud of them,” Howard said.
The LSA has been in preparation for the Amerasia Week Festival Night on Mar. 10 in which they will be performing two native dances.
They are also preparing for the annual Lao Heritage Night which will be held on Sunday, Mar. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
That night will be a two-hour show that will include live performances such as dancing, singing, a fashion show and instrumental pieces.
