Every year the Filipino Club at CSU Fullerton hosts the annual Friendship Games.
Vendors, dance groups, disparate kinds of food and step shows were featured at this year’s competitions.
The purpose of the Games is for Filipino collegiate clubs to compete in icebreakers, spirit contests, and picnic-type games all in the name of friendliness.
Thirty-seven schools participated with nearly 2,000 individuals competing at this year’s annual event.
The “spirit trophy” is the coveted award that all clubs vie and yearn for. Bragging rights and recognition are on the line.
Colleges and universities from all over California and a few surrounding states, sport unique and clever shirts while yelling and shouting to see which school encompasses the spirit of the festivities.
This year, forty members of Fresno State’s Filipino club, GIMIK, embarked on its trek to Fullerton with hopes of claiming the coveted Spirit Award.
For the first time ever, CSU Fresno congregated its biggest group ever.
Prior to the Games, much emphasis was placed by GIMIK as to what to wear at Fullerton.
With hard work and perseverance, several individuals created a baseball jersey design.
GIMIK members pranced around the Games and competed against renowned schools such as USC and UCLA.
Surprisingly, CSU Fresno, a little school that typically boasts 10-20 members received admiring attention from other schools! Out of 37 schools, CSU Fresno placed sixth over all, the best showing in GIMIK history!
There was a lot of fun to be had, mingling with other Filipino clubs, reminiscing with old friends from high school that now go to other colleges, and yelling at the top of everyone’s lungs GIMIK’s chant, “FRESNO - YOU KNOW!”
For 2,000 people to congregate, socialize, and compete all while in a friendly atmosphere was a phenomenal experience.
After this year’s impressive showing, next year the GIMIK club has high hopes of placing in the top three, or maybe even winning the coveted Spirit Award.
