"China Mary"
|
I passed by the grave of China Mary
Seemed like a strange name to me
I came to the grave of China Mary
What's going on, how could this be
I stopped at the grave of China Mary
Confused and lost at what I could see
Three different graves of three China Marys
All born years apart, all died at a different times
Yet all had the same name when buried
1821-1870, 1810-1860, 1800-1855
They washed miners clothes and mended tares
Cleaned the dishes and cooked them meals
The money they earned was hardly fair
Still they did it all despite how they felt
And the miners called them all China Mary
Was Ah Yuen really so hard to say
Couldn't they at least have learned their names
Was Jun Lee so hard to spell
They had no rights or power over anything
So when Mingmei Lau died she was buried
Her tombstone reads China Mary
