The Hmong Student Association (HmSA) is a organization on the California State University, Fresno campus.
It offers support for the Hmong and Non-Hmong students on campus to learn about the Hmong culture, academic concerns, recreation, and a place for the Hmong students to network with each other.
In 1984, a California State University, Fresno Hmong Engineering student named Toua Houa Yang perceived a need to form an organization. The vision was a club that would help provide academic assistance, social interaction and cultural preservation for Hmong students as well as other ethnic students at the university.
Therefore, with the assistance professors, HmSA was established. At the time, there were only a handful of Hmong students attending the university. The club boasted less than twenty initial members. Over the years, as the number of Hmong student enrollment increased, so did the organization's membership.
The organization remains active in the community and works conjunction with other groups. Promotion of Hmong culture is accomplished through annual Education Conferences and community service.
HmSA is well known as host to Asian Prom held at the end of each year. People from as far as Sacramento gather for an evening of fun.
Additionally, each year HmSA is a regular collaborator with Amerasia Week, filling the venue to capacity. Performances include music, dance, and cultural dramatizations that are a thrill to watch.
HmSA has gained a strong foothold in the community as a respected, dedicated and influential organization.
