Dogs Start New Year Traveling South

    Sun. January 6, 2008

It was the first road trip of the New Year for the Dogs as they traveled south to take on COC and Cal State Northridge this weekend. The Dogs were surprised by their number one fan in the nation Friday night as Cameron Roof made the trip all the way from Texas to support her Dogs.

The scoring started early as COC registered the first goal of the night just four minutes into the game. Fresno responded quickly with a short side sniper shot from Freshman Phil Matson just three minutes later. Junior Forward Jacob Winans would put the Dogs ahead minutes later with a quick wrist shot from the right wing. COC tied the game late in the period. However, Winans answered right back with a hard slap shot from the blue line. This put the Dogs up 3-2 at the end of the first.

The second period was even with both teams scoring twice. Both of Fresno’s goals were scored by Senior Captain Derek Miller.

The Dogs started the third period leading 5-4, but found themselves trailing 7-6 with only five minutes remaining. The Dogs continued to battle for loose pucks and took advantage of a power play opportunity as Matson buried his second of the night to tie up the game. Winans scored right after to give the Dogs the lead late in the third. The Dogs kept up the pressure and were able to hold off the Cougars with a final score of 8-7.

Northridge

Saturday night took the Dogs a little further south to Panorama City to face the Northridge Matadors. The Dogs came out a little slow and allowed four first period goals to their one. The Dogs picked up their game after the intermission and fought hard defensively the rest of the night allowing only one early second period goal. Fresno fought hard for every possession and every shot as they were able to get a goal in the second and one in the third. Unfortunately, this would not be enough to make up the early deficit as the Dogs fell 5-3.
