Fresno State 2008 NCCVL Champions

#3 After Nationals

April 12 - In the Single elimination component of the National Campus Championships Series Fresno State Men's Volleyball (#4) quickly eliminated Arizona State (#17) 2-0 [25-16, 25-23].  Our serve receive was able to handle the tough service of ASU.  Outside hitters Kit Maddox and Jake Wiens both lead the bulldogs with 10 kills each and setter Mike Delotto orchestrated the win with 25 assists.

In the Elite 8, Saturday afternoon, Fresno State defeated fellow Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League member, Santa Clara University (#18) 2-1 [20-25, 25-20, 15-12]. Kit Maddox lead the Bulldogs with 17 kills. Jake Wiens and Brett Gillen (RSH) added 9 kills each. Mike Delotto directed the comeback win with 35 assists.
 

In the Semi-finals, Fresno State lost to University of Illinois (#1) 0-2 [26-28, 18-25]. After overcoming a 4 point deficit, the Bulldogs served game point, but succumbed to the relentless attack of the Illini.  Jake Wiens and Kit Maddox lead the Bulldogs with 8 kills each, with Brett Gillen hammering out 5 more. U of I, ended up losing in the finals to Lakeland College 2-0 [26-24, 28-26].  Fresno State ends up 3rd in the nation, the highest final ranking since 2004. 

 

 

April 11 - Fresno State Men's Volleyball (#4) retains 4th seed by soundly defeating 2 power pool opponents, Virginia Tech (#5) 2-0 [25-17, 25-20] and James Madison University (#13) 2-0 [25-18, 25-19], which made the gold bracket. 

 

April 10 - Fresno State Men's Volleyball (#4) retains 4th seed, despite going 2-1 in early pool play.  Fresno State defeated University of Buffalo (#28) 2-0 [25-21, 25-22]; lost to University of Colorado 1-2 [25-11, 22-25, 8-15]; and came back to pummel Michigan State University (#21) 2-0 [25-13, 25-23].  Fresno State heads into Power pool play on Friday.

 

April 9 - Fresno State Men's Volleyball ranked 4th  at the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) National Championships.  Fresno State faces University of Michigan (#21), University of Buffalo (#28) and University of Colorado (#45) [who is probably seeded to low] in morning tournament pool play on Thursday, April 10.  At this tournament, seedings are retained as long as one wins the pool. 

 

April 5 - Fresno State Alumni Match:

 

Great Match:  You should have been there!  Lots of ibuprofen use by the Alums following the match!

3/30 - Fresno State starts slow against Berkeley then turns up the heat, defeating the Bears 3-1 [20-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21] to get to the NCCVL Finals for the first time since 2004.  Only two of the Bulldogs had been in a tournament final before, President Zack Moro and VP Mike Delotto.  Fresno State hit 382, had 13 blocks and 40 digs to sweep the Aggies 3-0 [27-25, 25-14, 25-19].

3/29 - Fresno State Men's Volleyball starts the NCCVL championships with a victory over Stanford (3-0) in the quarterfinals held in Davis. 

 

March 3-4 - Fresno State Men's Volleyball has tough first day at the NCCVL Tournament 3-2, but finishes strong 3-0, on day two (3/2/08). 

 

Fresno State Men's Volleyball survives the Far Westerns and finishes 7-2, losing in the Semi-Finals.  Setter Mike Delotto sprained his ankle in Game I against Arizona II, and libero Zack Moro takes the team into the semi-finals.  Steady play by Brett Gillen and Kit Maddox moved the team through Saturdays pool and carried the team into Sunday, when Jake Wiens joined the team. 

 

Fresno State starts the season 6-1.  March 7 at 8 PM [in the NORTH GYM] is our rescheduled game with Cal Poly SLO.  This will be the last of our homestand following the tournaments (Far Westerns @ Davis and NCCVL tournament @ Santa Clara.

 

We hope that all our fans will join us at home and on the road this year.  We have a few new players, adding to strengthen our offense and passing.  Please note the game times are highly variable this year, due to agreements with facility managers.

2007 City-County Boy's High School All-Star MAtch

Fresno State hosted the 18th Annual City-County High School Boy's All-Star Volleyball Match in Fresno State's North Gym on Wednesday, June 20th.  County defeated City 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-23).

Fresno State Men's Volleyball Congratulates all the participants in this year's event.
