Single Black Female, Looking . . .
World Premiere

There are a number of things our audiences should find interesting and entertaining regarding this show. It takes place in the early 70's in a fictional city near Oakland, Ca. It is a snap shot in time complete with huge Afros, flashy clothes, platform shoes and a variety of characters reminiscent of the Blaxploitation era.

Musically driven, the story revolves around a character who, because of her dedication to school and strict upbringing, has no clue as to how or where to find a husband after beginning her career as an optometrist. Knowing of no other viable way to find someone she runs an ad in the local newspaper's personal section. This starts a cavalcade of Òfreaks and geeks queuing up to meet and hopefully marry her.

At the same time, the protagonist Melodi, played by Kalisha Scott (Extremities and Gospel at Colonus) cannot shake the attachment she carries for her only foray into the dating scene, Jared, who mysteriously disappears. Melodi assumes he doesn't like her any longer and handles her heartbreak and loss of direction by leaving him diary like messages on his answering machine.

Her world begins to implode when the ex-wife of Jared appears having listened to most of her messages. Things also become complicated after she meets a sensible, down to earth man whose only drawback is that of being a famous R and B singer.

This show is an adaptation of the Taiwanese film The Personals and our premiere marks its world debut. The writer, Jeannette Jackson-McNeil has penned several other plays, and short stories, but this marks her first major production.

A number of actors including James Taylor, Aaron Few, Elliott Montgomery and James Mederios have been seen in a number of Fresno State productions.
