QLT Evaluation Instrument

Accessible Syllabus Template and Instructions
This Syllabus Template was created in Word and structured so that it is fully accessible .doc file and when saved to a PDF. The template contains information and resources specific to Web-enhanced or Online courses using Blackboard. This template was designed so that instructors could easily insert their information and be assured that their Syllabus meets accessibility requirements. The University Policy on Course Syllabi and Grading (Section 241 in the Academic Policy Manual) is fairly prescriptive, with requirements based on legal considerations, past experience with grade protests, and generally accepted good practice. Prior to preparing your syllabus, it is highly recommended that you consult the University Policy on Syllabi (APM 241).

Consider a Syllabus Quiz
To ensure that your students have actually read your syllabus, consider giving them a Syllabus Quiz. The purpose of a Syllabus Quiz is to familiarize the student with the content of the syllabus, class calendar, rules, and so on. By requiring a Syllabus Quiz students are responsible for their own learning. They know where they can find the answers to questions about the course and are aware of the rules relating to the class.
By doing this, they know where to find the answers to questions such as:
What day is a particular assignment due?
How can I reach my professor?
Does my professor allow for extra credit work?
The Welcome Letter and Message
Greet students with a Welcome Message and tell them how to get started in the course. The welcome message should be emailed to the students and also placed in the course Announcements area, usually this is the first thing students see when they log into the course. Keep the tone of the welcome message warm and inviting.
Customizing Your Blackboard Course
Instructors may easily add a banner using the Banner Template and select Course Menu options to customize their course.

Adding Test Questions in Blackboard
There are many ways to add test questions into Blackboard. Many publishers provide test banks that you can upload or you can type your own questions directly into the Test Canvas. If you have test questions in a Word document file, use these instructions for proper formatting and let the Blackboard Resource Center upload them for you: Respondus Formatting Instructions.
Blackboard 9.1 Course Orientation Module
The Blackboard 9.1 Course Orientation module may easily be uploaded into your course on Blackboard. You are encouraged to customize the module to meet the needs of your students using relevant content, prompts, and assignments. There are practice assignments within the Orientation using the most common Blackboard tools. The instructions will help you to upload the module to your course and easily edit the content. You will want to include all the Blackboard tools that you will be using in your course so that your students are comfortable with the environment before they actually begin the assignments or access content. This will help to ensure that the technology is transparent and the course runs smoothly. Make sure and import a new orientation module each semester to ensure that all content is current.

Blackboard 9.1 Course Templates
Each one of the Blackboard 9.1 Course Templates are set-up into modules or learning units which can be used in a fully online or web-enhanced course. Modules are helpful for organizing course content and learning events. Separate modules are generally used for each unit of learning. A unit of learning could be a chapter, a topic, a week in a semester, or however you decide to design your instructional units.
Learning modules create structure for learning as they organize content and instruction for the students. Building a learning module helps you think through the sequence of instruction. Module course design benefits both the instructor and the student in the following ways:
- Expedite creation
- Simplify course updates
- Add consistency for users
Each of the templates may be easily customized by adding and/or deleting content. Within each template there are ideas for introductory Icebreaker Activities and Assessments. You will also find placeholders for folder descriptions, goals and objectives, activities, assignments, discussions, resources for further study, etc.

Weekly Template: This template uses the weekly format and consists of 16 weeks, or a typical semester that are accessed from the Course Menu. In addition to a course Orientation and Introductions, each module contains a Pre-Assessment, Goals and Objectives, Activities and Assignments, for Further Study and a module Assessment. The Course Menu also contains a link to a Course Glossary. This template provides a basic framework for a fully online course. Download Weekly Template.
Course Menu Navigation Template: This template utilizes the Course Menu for easy navigation. The content on the menu consists of a Course Orientation and Introductions along with four “parts” to the course. Each part contains four modules, which like the Weekly Template consist of a Pre-Assessment, Goals and Objectives, Activities and Assignments, for Further Study and a module Assessment. Learning Module Template:Twelve Learning Modules are accessed through the Course Menu in this template. Using the Blackboard 9.1 Learning Module tool students navigate through the unit using a Table of Contents. The Course Menu also contains a link to the Discussion Board and a Glossary.
