Graduate Admission Requirements

Application deadlines: 

Fall: June 1 (Application Opens October 1)
April 1 (Early Application Deadline)

Spring: November 1 (Application Opens August 1)
November 15 (Supporting documents deadline)

*Please make sure to check if your program of interest is accepting applications for Spring 2018.

You are an International Student if: 

You are not a U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Resident (Green Card)
You hold or intend to hold non-immigrant F-1 or J-1 visa status while you are studying at CSU Fresno

How to Apply

1. There are two options to submit the application. 

Option I: Submit the online application via Cal State Apply and pay a non-refundable application fee of $55 USD by credit card. 

Or, 

Option II: Submit the Paper Application. To avoid errors, please type your information in the fillable form. Then, pay a non-refundable application fee of $55 USD at https://commerce.cashnet.com/fresnoem_ISSP by credit card. Or, it can be paid by check, money order, or bank draft. Please make it payable to "California State University, Fresno". 

2. Official English Proficiency Score Report (Institution Code: 4312)

TOEFL - Minimum of 80 iBT
IELTS - Minimum of 6.5 Band Score
Pearson's Test of English - 53
iTEP - 5.0
Fresno State's AEI Program - 550 Institutional TOEFL

 

NOTE: Mail in an unofficial score report along with other required documents.

Exception: If a graduate applicant has earned a bachelors or master's degree from a
college or university in the United States, the TOEFL or other English language proficiency
exam is not required.

If a graduate applicant has earned a bachelors or master's degree from a college or
university outside the United States where English is the principal language of instruction,
the TOEFL or other English language proficiency exam is not required. Please note:


* CSU Fresno interprets "where English is the principal language of instruction" to mean that
a school is located in a country where English is the daily medium of communication for the
majority of residents, and that students receive academic instruction in English at all levels
of education.

* Countries currently meeting the above requirement are: Australia; Canada (Quebec needs
English Demonstration); Ireland; New Zealand; UK; Antigua; Bahamas; Barbados; Belize;
Bermuda; Botswana; Dominica; Gambia; Ghana; Grand Cayman Is.; Grenada; Guyana;
Jamaica; Kenya; Lesotho; Liberia; Mauritius; Nigeria; Scotland; Sierra Leone; South Africa;
St. Kitt; St. Lucia; St. Vincent & Grenadines; Trinidad & Tobago; Uganda; Virgin Islands;
Wales; Zambia; Zimbawe.

Conditional Admission (ESL + Graduate Study)

The American English Institute (AEI) is located on campus. The International Admissions
works closely with AEI to offer "conditional admission" to academically eligible students
enrolled in the program. Admission to the university is guaranteed once the student has
completed the required English language proficiency. For details, please visit

3. Original or certified copies of Academic Credentials with literal English translation. Any coursework presented after an offer of admission is made will not be considered for credit.

4. Financial document (no older than 6 months) from sponsors showing the amount and source of support for a minimum of one school year of study. For details please review the estimated yearly cost charthere.

5. A copy of the biographic information/photo page in your passport.

6. Three Letters of Recommendation (if applicable).

7. Official admission test score report (GRE* or GMAT*) - if applicable
*Required by certain graduate programs.

8. Additional Documentation (if required by the department) - Masters’ candidates must meet additional program requirements as specified by the major department.
