Dr. Ellen Junn Appointed as Associate Provost

Dr. Ellen JunnProvost Jeri Echeverria is pleased to announce that Dr. Ellen Junn has accepted our offer to serve as Associate Provost effective summer 2008.  Dr. Junn is currently Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Development and Professor of Child and Adolescent Studies at California State University, Fullerton.  Over the past 17 years at Fullerton, she has held numerous academic and administrative positions and has provided service to that campus as a longstanding member of the Academic Senate.  She has been instrumental in the creation and innovation of a broad range of programs to further student and faculty integration, such as launching the Fullerton First Year, securing funding from the Fulbright Hays Groups Project Abroad for faculty to study in Thailand, and founding the Faculty Development Center.

Dr. Junn earned her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Michigan and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Cognitive and Developmental Psychology from Princeton University.  Her research and publication interests have included earthquake preparedness in child care settings, college teaching effectiveness, faculty development, and educational equity and diversity issues.  She has authored or co-authored over 30 refereed journal articles and has presented nearly 100 peer-reviewed presentations, keynote addresses, and workshops.  In addition, she serves on the editorial board of Early Childhood Research Quarterly and has served as a reviewer for Child Development and Journal of Clinical Child Psychology.

Active with the professional and external community, her public policy work on child and family issues gave rise to the passage of a new 1998 earthquake preparedness law to better safeguard children enrolled in licensed child care settings in the state.  She also serves with the California Department of Education (CDE) Child Development Division (CDD) on the Early Childhood Education Faculty Initiative Advisory Board, was a state appointee to the State Department of Education’s Task Force on Universal Preschool, an advisory board member of the Pre kindergarten Learning Development Guidelines Curriculum Project, and was invited by President George W. Bush and the First Lady to participate in the White House Summit on Early Cognitive Development in July 2001.  Finally, she has provided leadership as past President for the California Association for the Education of Young Children (CAEYC) and was on the Governing Board for the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) based in Washington, D.C.

Assist the Provost in welcoming Dr. Junn to our campus after her arrival this summer.  In the meanwhile, we continue to enjoy the partnership and leadership of Dr. William Fasse as Interim Associate Provost.

New Dean of Science and Mathematics

The Provost is pleased to announce that Dr. Andrew Rogerson has accepted our invitation to serve as Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, effective in spring or summer 2008 (to be determined).  Dr. Rogerson is a Professor of Biology and has served as the Dean of the College of Science at Marshall University (West Virginia) and as the Associate Dean and Director of Graduate programs at Nova Southeastern University, Florida. 

Dr. Rogerson has considerable experience in research with over 115 publications in refereed scientific journals and two million dollars in external funding.  Dean Rogerson has broad national and international experience in the sciences gained from working in six universities in London, California, Toronto, South Dakota (School of Mines & Technology), Florida's Nova Southeastern, Marshall in West Virginia, and two internationally recognized governmental laboratories (Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa, U.K. and Atlantic Research Laboratory, Canada).

Throughout his twenty-eight year academic career, Dr. Rogerson has been involved in research and teaching within many biological disciplines including ecology, taxonomy, physiology, and cell and molecular biology. Most recently he has worked on the ecology of protists particularly naked amoebae, the biological verification of emerging ballast water treatment systems, and fecal contamination of sand at recreational beaches.

We will keep you informed of his expected arrival as plans develop.  The Provost looks forward to working with Dr. Rogerson and will be inviting you to join her in welcoming him to our academic community.

Provost Echeverria is pleased to announce that Mr. Peter McDonald has been selected as the Dean of the Henry Madden Library, effective February 19, 2007.

Dr. Peter McDonaldPeter McDonald comes to our campus with extensive leadership in academic librarianship.  He comes from the Syracuse University Library, where he was the Associate University Librarian for Collection Services, and Director of the Belfer Audio Archive.  Prior to Syracuse, Peter served as the head librarian at the Geneva Experiment Station Library at Cornell University, after completing his work on the Core Agricultural Literature Project as chief bibliographer at the Mann Library.  Peter has also worked as a Mellon Preservation Intern at the New York Public Library, Research Division, and as a copy cataloger at the Grolier Club in New York.  Peter received his bachelors degree from McGill University in the 1970s, his masters in library science from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a Preservation Administrator’s certificate from Columbia University.  He is an elected member of the governing Council of the American Library Association.
