RE: New Dean of Engineering
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Jenkins has accepted our offer to become the new dean of the College of Engineering effective summer 2007.
Dr. Jenkins, comes to our campus from the University of Detroit Mercy where he currently serves as professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Prior to that, he served at the University of Washington, Seattle as faculty and Associate Chair and as a researcher at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is also a professional engineer in the State of Washington. His primary interests are in the characterization and modeling of the thermo-mechanical behavior of advanced materials (especially brittle materials such as structural ceramics and ceramic composites) in addition to probabilistic design, reliability and standards, codes, and databases.
Dr. Jenkins received his bachelor’s degree from Marquette University, his Masters from Purdue University and his PhD from the University of Washington. He also completed a post doctoral Fellowship at the University of Tokyo. His professional background includes industrial, governmental and academic experience. He is actively involved in several professional societies related to his field of Mechanical Engineering. He is well versed in the accreditation process and was instrumental in helping to achieve re-accreditation of Mechanical Engineering programs at both UW and UDM from ABET, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. He has also been a leader in engineering education and on his campus in conducting outreach to future engineering majors.
I look forward to working with Michael and invite you to join me in welcoming him to our academic community this summer.
