The Future of Main Street: A Tour of Fresno's Fulton Mall

Tuesday, November 3, 2009
Meeting location: Corner of Tuolumne and Fulton
Tour begins at 4:30 p.m.

America's oldest unaltered pedestrian mall, and the second downtown mall ever built, the Fulton Mall was the talk of the urban design world when it was installed in 1964 amidst a nationwide wave of urban renewal projects. Fulton, Fresno's original Main Street, was the bustling home of the region's premier national and local retailers, resplendent theaters, and tony office space.

Today much of the Fulton Mall's office space sits vacant, some of the grandest historic buildings suffer from neglect, and retail spaces rent for bargain-basement prices -- if at all. On most nights the Mall's original benches, fountains, fully grown trees, and nineteen works of public statuary stand guard over a landscape virtually devoid of human presence.

How will the Fulton Mall be revitalized to once again serve as the proud hub of life in the central San Joaquin Valley? Come hear from Craig Scharton, the City of Fresno's Downtown and Community Revitalization Director, about the City's plans for Fulton, and what role the community will play in the future of its Main Street.

If you are interested in attending this tour, please RSVP to Laura Alcantar at lalcantar@csufresno.edu by Monday, November 2, 2009 at noon.
