Ionizing Radiation Safety Program

The purpose of the Ionizing Radiation Safety Program is to ensure that radioactive materials and all sources of ionizing radiation are used safely at the University in compliance with all state and federal regulations.

This task is carried out by:

  1. Maintaining an inventory of all radioactive materials that come on campus;
  2. Regularly surveying all laboratories to ensure that adequate control is maintained of all radioactive materials;
  3. Conducting periodic training of all personnel who may reasonably come into contact with radioactive material or ionizing radiation;
  4. Ensuring that all radioactive waste is properly stored and disposed of.

Anyone who wishes to use radioactive materials or ionizing radiation at the University must obtain the required user and project authorizations. This may be done by contacting the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).

All radioactive material arriving on campus must be received and inspected by the RSO before it is released to the ordering party. The RSO should be notified in advance of all such orders.

In the event of an accidental release of radioactive material, IMMEDIATELY call Campus Police by dialing 911 from a campus phone or 278-8400 from a cell phone. Campus Police will notify the RSO. The RSO will assist the user in containing the material and conducting any necessary decontamination procedures.
