University Communications

The Office of University Communications at California State University, Fresno serves the strategic communications needs of the campus. The office coordinates all university communications, advocacy and public policy initiatives across the campus. Overall, the office works to present an accurate and substantive view of the university to a wide variety of constituents to advance the university’s goals and garner community support. Shirley Melikian Armbruster, associate vice president, oversees the office.

The Office of University Communications supports the university's academic mission by upholding campus efforts designed to encourage public, donor, community and government support of Fresno State. The flexible structure of the office ensures a team approach to communications issues.

University Communications oversees:

  • All aspects of communication and marketing across the campus to ensure accurate, timely and consistent messages.
  • The incorporation of communications planning in the overall planning for campus administrative and academic development to help ensure the success of critical projects; and
  • The strategic communications needs of the university’s multimillion-dollar comprehensive fund-raising campaign for the campus.

Fresno State’s Office of University Communications is organized as follows:

Administrative and Creative Services

Angel Langridge is responsible for managing support services for University Communications, including accounting and budget, human resources and event assistance. Margarita Adona maintains communications databases, contact and mailing lists and the online telephone directory. She also serves as the campus telephone operator and provides administrative support.

Campaign Communications

This unit directs the planning, development and implementation of public relations and communications projects for the “Campaign for Fresno State,” a major fundraising effort of the university. Campaign communications is responsible for campaign communications and publications, communications and presentations for a number of boards, and communications and marketing support for development directors and the university.

News and Media Relations

The News Division is headed by Shirley Melikian Armbruster and provides university information and news to internal and external groups. Working closely with colleges, departments and programs the news division prepares news releases and media advisories, and arranges news conferences. Tom Uribes serves as public information officer and works closely with media on a daily basis. The office frequently uses Mass Communication and Journalism Department student-interns to provide additional support to specific projects and programs of the campus. Publications and New Media

Bruce Whitworth, the director of University Web Communications and Publications oversees this unit, which handles campus publishing and design, Web and new media, promotional photography, the university catalog, the phone directory, publication and Web design, content standards, and production of FresnoState Magazine. Editor Lanny Larson has responsibility for producing the twice-yearly FresnoState Magazine and assisting media. The university strives to present a unified look and message. Web Services Coordinator Kevin Medeiros serves as key Web designer for University Advancement, responsible for implementing consistent, unified design templates and site “look and feel” for the primary university homepage. April Schulthies, catalog editor, produces the official academic catalog in print, as well as online and on CD. Design services for campus communications are provided by senior graphic designer Todd Graves.
