Computer Workstation Recommendation for Students
The University develops a recommended baseline purchase configuration to ensure that students can effectively participate in the educational programs and curriculum which will more and more assume the access to a personal computer. These recommendations are revised from time to time to reflect the need for new developments in hardware and software in the instructional program.
In collaboration with the Dell partnership, three suggested laptop models are recommended for student consideration [see above Dell login]:
- Dell Inspiron 2600: An affordable laptop to meet baseline needs
- Dell Latitude C610: A well configured laptop including a CD-RW drive
- Dell Latitude C840: An advanced laptop workstation with
- Notebook Accessories: Several options are listed for enhancing the capability of your selection, including a port replicator for connecting your laptop to a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer at home.
The University through a license with Microsoft is able to provide the Microsoft Office XP software to students for a nominal cost of $20 [see below for details]. This software program includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more. The software is obtained from the University's CVIP office.
Software for Students
The previous license agreement with Microsoft to provide Microsoft software for students expired on December 31, 2002. The California State University system and Microsoft has negotiated a new agreement, in part:
Some of the elements of the new Microsoft contract as it pertains to students have been clarified. We are in the process of placing new orders for software based on the new agreement. The primary differences:
1. Cost. We were able to offer products in the past at $20 per title. The new price will be $69.95. Although the $50 increase is unfortunate and will prevent some students from being able to purchase software, it is still significantly lower than retail prices. See below
for a price comparison.
2. Products. The new agreement only covers Windows and Office.
3. Rentals. The new contract does not allow us to rent software to students. Here's a quick price comparison:
