from THE MINUTES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE
ACADEMIC SENATE
CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, FRESNO
Office of the Academic Senate
January 26, 1998
4. Discussion of the California Education Technology Initiative (CETI).
Ben Quillian, Vice President for Administration, reported on the CETI situation. He thanked everyone who devoted time and attention into the CETI issue, so that he could forward the concerns. There was a meeting of the SIP representatives last week. The Legislative Hearing prompted the corporate partners to ask for more time. They don't want controversy; they want to make money and assist the CSU, so they too have taken more time to look at the whole package. Maynard Robinson and Tom West have told the SIP representatives that as much time as necessary would be taken to get the best possible deal. Deadlines and time are no longer an issue. SIP representatives need an ample window to communicate with campuses and get feedback, so the partners need to be mindful of the academic calendar. A non-fluid document may be ready in March to review. Chancellor Reed's approach is different from Chancellor Munitz. He wants to know the particulars and doesn't seem content with recommendations. He is concerned with communication. Chancellor Reed does not consider CETI a done deal. Dr. Quillian emphasized that this process is not perceived as adversarial, but that everyone understood that faculty were not Luddites, not opposed to technology, but just wanted their knowledge to be applied to this situation.
