Wireless Networking

Based on the hard-wired network infrastructure, the wireless network will provide laptop computers and PDAs with mobile access to the campus data network and the internet.  The Madden Library has been providing students access to electronic materials through a wireless network since 1999 (see Library Wireless and instructions).  The University has begun a five-year project to provide 10 MB-per-second 802.11b wireless connectivity in classrooms, meeting rooms, the Library, the University Student Union, and open areas where people congregate.  A pilot wireless network (the Red Zone project) already serves the area from the Peace Garden (north of the library) to the Rose Garden (south of Thomas Administration), and includes the Student Union & Pavilion and the University Center.  Classroom wireless networks will be designed so that laptop-equipped students can access the internet and share documents within a classroom without interfering with the instructor’s network access or neighboring classrooms.  Planning activities continue to evolve.
