Did
you know?
The Fresno State Alumni Association [FSAA] allocates 10% of annual
membership fees to a Student Scholarship Endowment Fund! In 2003-04, the
FSAA awarded 70 scholarships totaling $78,000 to students based on
academic achievement and financial need. The
FSAA leads all of the alumni
associations on the 23 campuses of the CSU system with student scholarship
giving!
Fresno
native Amanda Gene Withrow comes from a Fresno State Bulldog
family! Her sister, Diana M. Withrow-Rey, is attending Fresno State; and
their father, Thomas A. Withrow, attended Fresno State. A sophomore
majoring in interior design with a minor in journalism, she has been named
to the Dean’s List. Amanda graduated from Fresno High as class
valedictorian. “FSAA’s
support allows me to concentrate on my education,” she said. “Thank you so
much.”
Born
in Guadalajara, Mexico; Roberto Gomez is the first member of his
family to attend college. A senior completing a BS in business
administration, he is active in the
Fresno State Student Alumni Association
and serves on the Homecoming and Vintage Days Committees. “My
FSAA
scholarship helps pay for room and board, as well as textbooks,” he said.
“Thank you for the generous support!” Roberto volunteers for Athletic
Marketing and plans to pursue an MBA.

Students Win!
President John D. Welty
and Dr. Matthew Jendian
[Sociology] joined 14 Fresno State students in attending the 32nd annual
American Humanics Management Institute held in Kansas City, MO, last
month. Fresno State's American Humanics Student Association received the
“Outstanding Community Service Award” for the second consecutive year.
During the 2002-03 academic year, these students had contributed more than
7,220 volunteer hours in the Central Valley assisting a variety of
non-profit organizations through community service projects.
“Prisoners
of War” by Steve Yarbrough
Award-winning author Steve Yarbrough, endowed professor of English, has
released his third novel, “Prisoners of War.” The WWII-era novel explores
questions of morality and social inequities in the rural South when a
group of Germans POW’s are quartered at a local camp and sent to work as
day laborers on nearby farms. His other published novels are “The Oxygen
Man” [1999] and “Visible Spirits” [2001].

softball standout
Laura Berg [1998], a two-time Olympic gold medalist
[Atlanta, 1996; Sydney, 2000] makes her third trip to the Olympics. Berg,
a four-time All-American, is also a three-time Pan American Games gold
medalist and a three-time ISF World Champion. She was named Outstanding
Alumna for Athletics by the
Fresno State Alumni Association
at the Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala in 2003. Currently, Berg is based at the
U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA.
Wrestling: Stephen
Abas
August 22-29; Ano Liossia Olympic Hall; Athens.
Former
Fresno
State
grappler Stephen Abas [2004], a three-time NCAA Champion [1999, 2001,
2002], a four-time All-American [1998, 1999, 2001, 2002] and a Pan-American gold medalist
[2003] makes his first trip to the Olympics. He is also a World Cup
Champion [2002] and winner of the Titan Games [2003].
Abas
was named Fresno State's Male Athlete of the Year in both 1999 and 2001.
He is currently based at the U.S. Olympic
Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO.

Amanda
Scott, a former Fresno State softball standout, has agreed to play for
the New York/New Jersey Juggernaut of the National Pro Fastpitch [NPF]
league. Scott will wear the same jersey number [#36] as she did when she
played for Fresno State.
Candace
[Jones] Egan
[1980] recently received two Communicator Awards for 2003
in international competition recognizing companies and individuals in
print, television and radio. Her "Video Production Basics" Web site
received the highest award, a Crystal Award of Excellence. The Summer Arts
Documentary, "Behind the Scenes of Seeing Sara," received an Award of
Distinction.
Charles
Ahlem
[1972] was recently appointed as Undersecretary of the
California Department of Food and Agriculture. Ahlem is also a founding
partner of Hilmar Cheese Co.
David
Carr, quarterback [#8] for the Houston Texans, has had a Super Bowl
Exclusive Figure released in his likeness. The figure was unveiled at
Super Bowl XXXVIII. Production has been limited to 5,000 pieces.
Dennis
DeLiddo
[1968],
coach of the Fresno State Wrestling Team, has recorded his 300th
career win. DeLiddo, who as been at Fresno State for 22 seasons, has been
named WAC Coach of the Year four times.
Derek
Fridolfs
[1998] is an inker for several comic books including
"Spiderman," "Star Trek," "Fantastic Four," "X-Men," "Buffy the Vampire
Slayer," and "Wolverine." He also worked on the "KISS" issue.
Fresno
Fuego: Five former Fresno State Soccer standouts are members of the
Fresno Fuego soccer team: Jeremy Proud [Goalkeeper],
Derek Lopez [Defender],
Makoto Anderson [Forward],
Jose Nino Rivas
[Defender] and Matt Harold [Reserve].
Judith
"Anne" [Marino] Wilson
[1978] writes that her first book of gypsy,
flamenco-inspired poetry, "Solea", is being released by Finishing Line
Press in April of 2004. Anne received Masters from University of New
Mexico [1992] and now teaches at University of San Diego and in the UCSD
Extension. She has been a runner-up or an award winner for numerous
literary prizes, is in the 2004 edition of the Marquis "Who's Who in
America" for literary achievement.
Lewis
"Lew" Brewer [1977] has been named the Director of the Junior
Competition for the USA Tennis High Performance Program in Key Biscayne,
FL by the United States Tennis Association. Brewer was a four-time varsity
letter winner in tennis at
Fresno State. He also
authored "Professional Tennis Drills," one of the all-time best selling
tennis instructional books.
Lynne
Rauch is retiring after 34 years in education, most recently as
Superintendent of School District 54,
Illinois' largest
elementary school district with 27 schools and 15,000 students. Rauch was
honored with the "Break the Mold Award" in 2000 by the Illinois Board of
Education for using her leadership and skills to implement new and
improved approaches to learning.
Matthew
Taylor [1996] and Nancy Beauregard are happy to announce their
marriage that took place on
June 5, 2003
in the Brazilian Room of Tilden Park in Berkeley, CA.
They are expecting their first child later this summer.
Paul
Dolan
[1977],
President of Fetzer Vineyards, has written the book
"True to Our Roots." His son, Heath [1996], is also a
Fresno State alumnus.
Paul
Evert
[1969, 1972] of Paul Evert RV Country received the Institute for
Family Business' California Family Business Award. The Institute is
affiliated with California State University, Fresno's Craig School of
Business. Evert is a life member in the
FSAA.
Paul
O'Neill
[1960] is profiled in Ron Suskind's new book, "The Price of
Loyalty: George W. Bush, the White House, and the Education of Paul
O'Neill." O'Neill is the former U.S Secretary of the Treasury and the
past CEO of the Alcoa Corporation. O’Neill, an annual member in the
FSAA,
received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the
FSAA
in 1991.
Rick
Husband
[1990] has been posthumously honored with the naming of the
Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport in Texas. Col. Husband was the
Commander of the Space Shuttle, Columbia. A bronze statue of Husband has
been unveiled at the airport, also. Husband
was the recipient of the
FSAA’s
2002 Outstanding Alumnus Award for the College of Engineering and Computer
Science.
Roy
Christopher
[1957, 1961] is being honored at the 8th Annual
Art Directors Guild Awards on February 14 for with the coveted honorary
“Lifetime Achievement Award.” Christopher is the winner of seven Emmy
Awards and is a 32-time Emmy nominee. He and his wife, Dorothy, [both life
members in the
FSAA] created
the Roy and Dorothy Christopher Theatre Arts Scholarship in Fresno State’s
Theatre Department in 1996.
Theresa
Alvillar-Speake
[1983] serves as the Director of the Office of
Minority Economic Impact and Diversity at the U.S. Department of Energy in
Washington, D.C. She was appointed to the position by President George W.
Bush. Alvillar-Speake was also featured as one of the Top 100 Latinas in the United States by
"Hispanic Magazine" in June of 2003. She is a
FSAA life member.
