Did
you know?
The Fresno State Alumni Association [FSAA] allocates 10% of annual
membership fees to a Student Scholarship Endowment Fund! In 2003-04, the
FSAA awarded 70 scholarships totaling $78,000 to students based on
academic achievement and financial need. The
FSAA leads all of the alumni
associations on the 23 campuses of the CSU system with student scholarship
giving!
A
graduate student, Argelia Lara is completing her MS degree in
counseling. She is attending Fesno State with her younger sister, Carmen,
and they are from Wasco, CA. Argelia is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor
Society, received a Graduate Equity Fellowship and was named an
Outstanding Graduate Student last year. “The FSSA scholarship and support
will assist me in succeeding,” she says. “Thank you so much.” Argelia will
pursue a doctoral program in educational policy.
A
member of Phi Theta Kappa and National Honor Societies, Jeffery A.
Campbell has maintained a 4.0 GPA while at Fresno State. A junior,
Jeff has been named to the Dean’s List and is studying business
administration with an international option. His sister, Joan Campbell-Enos,
also graduated from Fresno State. They were born in Oakland, CA. “Thank
you for the FSAA scholarship,” he says. “I’m grateful for the support.”

Laura Berg [1998], a two-time Olympic gold medalist
[Atlanta, 1996; Sydney, 2000] makes her third trip to the Olympics. Berg,
a four-time All-American, is also a three-time Pan American Games gold
medalist and a three-time ISF World Champion. She was named Outstanding
Alumna for Athletics by the
Fresno State Alumni Association
at the Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala in 2003. Currently, Berg is based at the
U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA.
Wrestling: Stephen
Abas
August 22-29; Ano Liossia Olympic Hall; Athens.
Former
Fresno
State
grappler Stephen Abas [2004], a three-time NCAA Champion [1999, 2001,
2002], a four-time All-American [1998, 1999, 2001, 2002] and a Pan-American gold medalist
[2003] makes his first trip to the Olympics. He is also a World Cup
Champion [2002] and winner of the Titan Games [2003].
Abas
was named Fresno State's Male Athlete of the Year in both 1999 and 2001. He is currently based at the U.S. Olympic
Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO.

Vice-President:
Cynthia Teniente-Matson
Cynthia Teniente-Matson has begun her position as Vice-President for
Administration and Chief Financial Officer. Previously, she was Vice
Chancellor for Administrative Services at the University of Alaska,
Anchorage. Matson was among the 2002 "Top 40 Under 40" selected by the
Anchorage Chamber of Commerce and "The Alaska Journal of Commerce."

Sausages: Best in the West
Three Fresno State student-produced sausages were judged as “Best in the
West” by the California Association of Meat Processors Student
Competition. The three sausages, Spicy Italian, Smoked Lamb and Crazy
Cajun were produced by students Randy Long, John Amparan and Tiffany
Labuga. Jon Mitts also received an Honorable Mention for his Apple Maple

Spirit Dances Earns 6th Place National Finish
The Fresno State Spirit Dance Team placed sixth place nationally at the
2004 Collegiate Cheer and Dance National Championships presented by the
United Spirit Association. They are coached by Stacia Swan.

Devejian
was ordained a Priest in the Armenian Apostolic Church, becoming the first
American-born clergyman ever ordained in Holy Etchmiadzin, the mother
cathedral for the worldwide Armenian Church.
Billy
Volek
has agreed to a four-year contract extension as the Quarterback [#7] for
the Tennessee Titans.

Prandini [1974], the Principal of Clovis West High School
won First Place in the
California State High School Principals Spanish Lip Sync Contest.
David
Kilby [1977] was promoted to Senior Vice President for External
and Employer Relations at the California Chamber of Commerce in
Sacramento, CA.

[2003] is the Vice President of Bulldog Beverage Company which brews
Bulldog Root Beer. He is a Member of the
FSAA.
Jean
Chaffee
[1962] has published a children's book, "Nosey the Elephant," about the
arrival of a new, baby elephant to the Chaffee Zoological Gardens [Fresno
Zoo] in 1949. Her late husband, Dr. Paul Chaffee, was the former director
of the zoo.

Sorrenti
[1964] is opening a new Sierra Nut House and J. Sorrenti Wine Bar at the
Villaggio Shopping Center in Fresno.
John
S. Hernandez [1996] has been installed as the President Elect of the
Central California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He is an annual member of
the
FSAA.

Loiacono
[1985] has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Software at Sun
Microsystems, Inc. in Santa Clara, CA.
Kris
Curran
[1996] is the Winemaker at Sea Smoke Cellars in Lompac, CA. She was
featured on the cover of the Feburary 2004 issue of "American Vineyard."
Louis
Moreau
[1990] won a Silver Medal for his 2001 Chablis [1er Cru Les Fourneaux] at
the 2003 Agricultural Fair in Paris. Moreau is a sixth generation
winemaker in the Burgundy Region of France.
Nicolas
[Nick] Watney
[2003] a former All American golfer at Fresno State, is the record holder
for three Fresno-courses: Brighton Crest [59], Riverbend [62] and
Sunnyside [63].
Pat
Ricchiuti
[1970], a
third-generation diversified fresh fruit and nut crop
grower/packer/shipper, serves as the First Vice President of the Fresno
County Farm Bureau. He and his wife, Vinci, are Life Members of the
FSAA.
Paul
Dolan
[1977] is launching a new California winery: Sauvignon Republic Cellars.
He is the author of "True To Our Roots: Fermenting A Business Revolution."
Raymundo
[Ray] Vizcarra [2004] and
Jeffrey Prang celebrated their Domestic Partnership Ceremony on March 28,
2004 in West Hollywood, CA. Vizcarra is a Music major studying the
trombone at Fresno State, as well as a Student Member of the
FSAA. Prang is the Mayor for the City of
West Hollywood.
Roy
Vasquez [1987] has been installed as President of the Central
California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He is a Member of
the
FSAA.
