Painting
the Fountain Red
The Student Alumni Association inaugurated a new Homecoming tradition this
year— Painting the campus’ memorial fountain red! Students met on
Monday,
October 25 and had a helping hand from President John D. Welty, Dr. Peter
Smits and others.
Bulldog
Walkway
A new, permanent on-campus tribute to
Fresno State alumni,
graduates and friends was dedicated on Wednesday,
October
27 on the north side of the Save Mart Center. Honorees include alumni
Todd Beamer, Lt. Cmdr.
Otis Vincent Tolbert, and Col.
Rick Husband. Future plans include extending Bulldog Walkway to
the Smittcamp Alumni House and throughout the campus. Personalized tiles
are priced at $250, $500 and $1,000 each.

Awards Gala
The FSAA presented the 52nd Annual Top Dog Alumni Awards at the
Save
Mart
Center
on Thursday, October 28. The campus’ most prestigious event honored Fresno
State’s Top Dogs including Distinguished Alumnus Sen.
Chuck Poochigian [1972], pictured with this wife, Debbie.
Guests
enjoyed the popular chocolate fountain, pictured. The FSAA also awarded
$80,000 in scholarships to students that evening. The FSAA is proud to
rank No. 1 among the 23-campus CSU alumni associations with student
scholarship giving.
Golden
Grad Society
Reunion
Fresno State’s Class of 1954 was honored on Friday, October 29, with the
Golden
Grad Society Reunion. Classmates rekindled fond memories and were awarded
Golden Grad Society Medallions.
Homecoming
Tailgate
Bulldogs of all ages enjoyed a Homecoming Tailgate complete with all the
trimmings on Saturday, October 30 before the
Fresno State vs. SMU
football games. Highlights included appearances by
Timeout and the Fresno
State Cheerleaders.
The
224-member Bulldog Marching Band, under the direction of Dr. Gary Gilroy,
also led the crowd in singing the Alma Mater.

Did
you know?
The Fresno State Alumni Association [FSAA] allocates 10% of annual
membership fees to a Student Scholarship Endowment Fund! In 2004-05, the
FSAA is awarding scholarships totaling $80,000 to students based on
academic achievement and financial need. The
FSAA leads all of the alumni
associations on the 23 campuses of the CSU system with student scholarship
giving!
A
native of Hanford, CA; Danette Leal is a junior pursuing a BA in
liberal studies. She plans on completing a teaching credential in the
future. "The
FSAA
scholarship supports my education at Fresno State," she says. "I am grateful for this gift." Currently, Danette
volunteers as a tutor at the J. E. Young Academic Center, an alternative
high school within the Fresno Unified School District.
A
Fresno native and a second generation Fresno State Bulldog, Brad Dawson
is a freshman studying biology with options in physiology and anatomy. His
parents, Ken and Lauren, also attended Fresno State. Brad achieved the
rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and is a member of
Sigma Phi Epsilon. "This
FSAA
scholarship allows me to focus on my studies," he said. "Thank you for the
support." He plans on attending dental school.

Celebrates 1st Anniversary
The Save Mart Center opened its doors for a gala Community Open House on
Nov. 1, 2003. In its first year, the center hosted nearly 800,000 visitors
for more than 150 events that ranged from opera legend Andrea Bocelli to
children’s favorite Barney, from Bulldog basketball to WWE wrestling and
from church services to community fairs.
Jumpstart
Mentoring Program
Ranked #1 in Nation
Fresno State’s Jumpstart program has been ranked No. 1 out of 57 sites
nationwide recently. Funded by AmeriCorps, Jumpstart is a program pairing
college students with preschool children from low-income backgrounds in
one-on-one relationships.
Executive
MBA Program, Cohort III
The Craig School of Business at Fresno State’s Executive MBA program is
recruiting students for Cohort III to begin in April of 2005. To date, 50
students are currently enrolled in Corhorts I and II with Cohort I
scheduled to graduate in December of 2004. Contact Professor

The new Development Director of the College of Health and Human Services,
Sue Moore Fenske, begins her duties on December 1. She is the former
Executive Director of the Community Food Bank and was recognized as one of
the Top 10 Business and Professional Women in 2002.

Luethke is the Golf Professional at Riverside Golf Course in
Fresno.
His daughter, Laura, is a current member of Fresno State's Golf Team.

Mar has been selected as the Grand Marshal for Porterville's
Veterans Day Parade. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

“Matty” Matoian [1965], the President of OK Produce, was
recently honored by Fresno State with the renaming and dedication of a
campus street in his family's name-- "Matoian Way."

[Braze] Phanco [1993] is the Creative Director of Virtual Cubed.
Frank
M. Ruiz [1992] created the logo for MINDHUB, an online community
that encourages and supports creative professionals in the
Central Valley.
Denise
[Black] Sciandra [1975] is the Founding President of the Arne
Nixon Center Advocates at Fresno State. She recently was lauded with the
2004 Fundraiser of the Year Award by the Henry Madden Library.
David
Schilling [1990] is the President of Royal Charter Mortgage,
affiliated with London Properties in
Fresno.

Shoup [1999] and Brandy Ramos Nikaido are proud to announce the

[Nick] Watney [2003], a former member of the Bulldog Golf Team,
recently captured his first Nationwide Tour victory and earned his PGA
Tour playing card for 2005.
Jeffrey
Weaver was recently inducted into the 2004 Bulldog Baseball Hall
of Fame. He's currently a Pitcher [#36] for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In
1996, Weaver won a Bronze Medal for the U.S. at the Olympics in Atlanta.
