Danette Leal.A native of Hanford, CA; Danette Leal is a junior pursuing a BA in liberal studies. She plans on completing a teaching credential in the future. "The FSAA scholarship supports my education at Fresno State," she says. "I am grateful for this gift." Currently, Danette volunteers as a tutor at the J. E. Young Academic Center, an alternative high school within the Fresno Unified School District.

Brad Dawson.A Fresno native and a second generation Fresno State Bulldog, Brad Dawson is a freshman studying biology with options in physiology and anatomy. His parents, Ken and Lauren, also attended Fresno State. Brad achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. "This FSAA scholarship allows me to focus on my studies," he said. "Thank you for the support." He plans on attending dental school.

and Journal Win Awards

Two publications produced by the University Communications Office at Fresno State were named silver medal winners at the annual District VII conference of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education [CASE], held last month in San Francisco. Fresno State Magazine, a twice-yearly publication launched in 2003, was awarded the silver medal in the “illustrations” category for the cover on the Summer 2004 issue. The University Journal, an e-newsletter for faculty and staff, won a silver award in the “e-mail newsletters” category.

Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School.Louis Ammirati has been named Teacher of the Year for 2004-05 for Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic School in Tucson, AZ. A Spanish Teacher, he is also a retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel. 

Tom Bohigian.Thomas [Tom] Bohigian (1981) has been promoted to State Director for U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer [D-Calif.]. He is also a FSAA member.

Shawn Carey.Shawn Carey [1985] is the Principal of Saint Anthony School in Fresno. 

Bill Coate.William “Bill” Coate [1984], a teacher at Sierra Vista Elementary in Madera, is leading 14 students on a trek from Madera to El Paso following Mariposa's '49er's William P. Huff's trail from 150 years ago.

Brad Fitzhenry.Bradley Fitzhenry [1988] is well-known as "DJ Bradley" and operates Sonic Foundation that has produced more than 100 parties throughout California.

Fresno Advertising Federation.Fresno Advertising Federation has seven Fresno State alumni on its Board of Directors: Tricia Bowlby, Doug Broten [1971], Vince Coronado [1994], Cliff Davis [1974], Eric McCormick [1994], Tim Ritchey [1975] and Stephanie Wong [1993].

Fresno City College.Fresno City College's Employment Resource Center recently honored three Fresno State alumni for "exceptional dedication to FCC students by providing employment and internship opportunities": Craig Baum [1993], Cary Catalano [1999] and Emy Lopez.

Oregon Public Broadcasting.Allison Frost [1992] is the Producer and Host of "Oregon Considered" with Oregon Public Broadcasting in Portland. In 2003, she was won 1st Place for Public Service Reporting on the Radio by the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors.

Anthony Gamber.Anthony Gamber [1982] has received the 2004 Realtor of the Year Award by the Fresno Association of Realtors.

OptiStreams.Alison [Curtice] Haugan [1986] is the President and Co-Founder of OptiStreams, Inc. It has been named to the 23rd Annual “Inc. 500” List of America’s Fastest-Growing Companies.

Weed Man.Ronald Hemman [1997] has opened a Weed Man franchise in Hanford, CA to serve Kings and Tulare Counties. 

Stanley Jantz.Stanley Jantz [1974] has co-written “Christianity 101” with Bruce Bickel. Together, they have written several books including "Bible Prophecy 101," "Growing As A Christian 101," "Knowing the Bible 101" and "Knowing God 101."

Enrique Lopez.Enrique Lopez [1982] has opened Art Box Gallery in Fresno's Tower District. It's "the friendly gallery for the serious collector."

Laurie Marshall.Laurie Marshall [1999] is the Chief Engineer for the third flight of the hypersonic X-43A research vehicle at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base. Preliminary data showed that on a test flight November 16, 2004 the X-43A flew at Mach 9.8, or 7,000 MPH at 110,000 feet, which is nearly 10 times the speed of sound.

Jennifer Nakamura.Jill Nakamura was chosen to the All-USA Teacher Team by “USA Today.” She is a first-grade teacher at Wishon Elementary in Fresno."  

Baby Haley Ryane McKenry.Shelley [Cousineau] [1996] and Sean McKenry are proud to announce the birth of a baby girl, Haley Ryane. She was born on June 26, 2004 in Saint Agnes Medical Center. 

Patrick Prince.Patrick Prince [1997] is the MLS Operations Manager for the Fresno Association of Realtors.  

Shannon and Brian Puphal.Shannon [Spann] and Brian Puphal were married on September 5, 2004 at the Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite.

COPS.Mark Salazar [1993], a Sgt. with the Fresno Police Department, has taped an episode of the television program “COPS.”

Jim Santos.Jim Santos [1962] has been inducted to the United States Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 1980, he was named to the Men's Track and Field Coaching Staff for the U.S. Olympic Team. A FSAA member, Santos is the Founder and President of Navy Run Jump 'n Throw. 

Jim Spinetta.James “Jim” Spinetta [1993] has been awarded the Young Farmers & Ranchers Achievement Award by the California Farm Bureau Federation. He is a fifth-generation grape grower at Charles Spinetta Winery in Plymouth, CA.

Angelo Stalis.Angelo Stalis [1970] has been predicting the weather for more than 30 years. He's with KFSN Channel 30 [ABC] in Fresno.

Raymundo Vizcarra.Raymundo Vizcarra [2004] made it to the second round of “American Idol” during recent auditions in San Francisco. A FSAA member, his on-air segments will air on January 18 and 19, 2005 on FOX.
