A native of Hanford, CA; Danette Leal is a junior pursuing a BA in liberal studies. She plans on completing a teaching credential in the future. "The FSAA scholarship supports my education at Fresno State," she says. "I am grateful for this gift." Currently, Danette volunteers as a tutor at the J. E. Young Academic Center, an alternative high school within the Fresno Unified School District.

A Fresno native and a second generation Fresno State Bulldog, Brad Dawson is a freshman studying biology with options in physiology and anatomy. His parents, Ken and Lauren, also attended Fresno State. Brad achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. "This FSAA scholarship allows me to focus on my studies," he said. "Thank you for the support." He plans on attending dental school.

President John D. Welty
Presents Medal of Distinction
to His Holiness Karekin II
The Presidents Medal of Distinction was presented to His Holiness Karekin II, head of The Armenian Church, by President John D. Welty at a private ceremony held on campus last month. In return, His Holiness presented President Welty with a small, sterling silver tray.

Maddy Institute Board
Civic and business leader William Lyles and Assemblymember Mike Villines [1990] [R-29^th Dist.] have been elected to The Maddy Institute Board of Directors. Departing board members are Vern Crow [1966] and Deborah Nankivell. Villines and Crow are FSAA Members.

Capacity Building Specialist: Donna DeRoo
Donna DeRoo [1992], a Capacity Building Specialist with the Central California Children's Institute at Fresno State, was selected as one of 20 researchers, administrators and minority health grant specialists nationwide to represent the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. She is a FSAA Member.

Black Issues in Higher Education

Sigma Theta Tau Honors Naomi Strom
Naomi Strom, RN, Director of Volunteer Relations, as recently honored by Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing for "contributions in mentorship within the nursing community." She is a FSAA Member.

1^st Place: Craig School of Business
Fresno State emerged as the National Champions at the 75^th annual Society of Human Resource Management conference held in San Diego last month. This year, the Craig School student chapter received the “Top Ten” Superior Merit Award, as well, which is given to the best chapters out of 430 worldwide.

New Position: Katie Zenovich
Katie Zenovich has been named Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at Fresno State. For the past four years, she has been the Director of Development for the Kremen School of Education and Human Development. She is a FSAA Member.

KFSR Radio Launches Podcasting
Fresno State’s non-commercial, student-run radio station, KFSR 90.7 FM, has launched a new Web site, complete with a new technology: podcasting. A free service, podcasting allows listeners to subscribe to a specific radio program via computer. | [Online]

Athletes of the Year
Logan Mankins [Football] and Jaime Southern [Softball] have been named the 2004-05 Athletes of the Year in a vote of Fresno-area media members. Mankins was picked in the first-round of the NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. Southern was the No. 1 pick of the Ladies Professional Fastpitch Association.

Bulldogger: Anthony Estep
Fresno State Rodeo Team member Anthony Estep finished ninth in the nation and second in the region in the tie-down calf roping at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming last month.

Baseball: Beau Mills
Fresno State Baseball third baseman Beau Mills  was named All-American status, as well as WAC’s Freshman of the Year.

New Wrestling Coach:
Shawn Charles
Shawn Charles has been named the new Head Wrestling Coach by Athletic Director Thomas Boeh. Charles as the head assistant coach for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Softball: Amada Scott
Former Fresno State softball standout, Amanda Scott, has been named pitching coach for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. At Fresno State, Scott was named “one of the greatest athletes of the 20^th Century” and was a member of the NCAA Championship team in 1998.

Matt Garza Selected for Minnesota Twins
Pitcher, Matt Garza, was the 25^th overall selection in the Major League Baseball Draft. Fresno State’s top pitcher this season, he has signed with the Minnesota Twins.

Joel C. Abels [1996], Founding Director of Children's Musical Theaterworks, presents "101 Dalmations" and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" this summer at Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in Fresno.

Kelly Banister [2002] is a Communications Consultant for Arrival Communications. 

William Boyajian [1975], President of the Gemological Institute of America, was recently honored at a dinner recognizing his 30 years of service. Boyajian has earned a Graduate Gemologist Diploma and is a Certified Gemologist of the American Gem Society.

Jake Bragonier [1996] is the new Public Information Officer for the Madera Unified School District. He formerly was the Assistant Director of Media Relations for Fresno State Athletics for the past six years. 

S. Eric Day [2003] has co-founded Woodward Shakespeare Festival, which presents "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Romeo and Juliet" at Woodward Park in Fresno later this summer.

Mark Doggett [1999] has been honored as an exemplary member of Epsilon Pi Tau. Dr. Doggett is the Department Chair of the Industrial Technology at Humboldt State University. 

Monte Francis [2004]of KSEE Channel 24 [NBC] has won a second consecutive Emmy Award for the story “Three Strikes: A Criminal Crisis.”

Maj. Gen. Jon Gallinetti [1972], a 36-year U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was recently honored at the 22nd Clovis Hall of Fame and Community Awards Gala.

Coke Hallowell [1957] has been honored as one of six nationwide winners of the annual Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for Outstanding Public Service, the top tier of the Jefferson Award for Public Service. Hallowell, a FSAA Member, was named the Oustanding Alumna for the Kremen School of Education and Human Development at the Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala in 2004.

Brandi Hitt [2001] is a News Anchor for KMPH 26, the FOX affiliate in Fresno.

James Huff [1991] is a Marketing Consultant for Azteca American Television in Fresno. 

Scott Keller [1984] invented the "Presentation Mate Dry Erase Marker Caddy" manufactured by Strategic Synergies.

Rosellen Kershaw [1948] was recently featured as "Someone You Should Know" in "The Fresno Bee." She is a FSAA Life Member. 

David Kittredge [1990] owns and operates Triptych, a restaurant in San Francisco.

Kurt Madden [1976] is the CEO of One by One Leadership in Fresno.

Harry [Margosian] Markus [1961] has been appointed Business Development Officer for United Security Bank in Fresno. He is a FSAA Life Member. 

Joshua Mettee [1997] founded American West Books while a student in the Craig School of Business.

Rina Molari-Korgel [1983] has been hired as Metrology Specialist and Technical Key Account Representative for Leica Geosystems. 

Imad Naffa [1983] operates NAFFA International, which reviews building plans meet legally required building codes and regulations. 

Kathleen Millison, Clovis City Manager, was recently awarded the Excellence in Business Award.

Jose Saldivar [1990] was named Professor of the Year at Bakersfield College. Dr. Saldivar is a professor in the Biology Department.

Scott T. Steffen [1974] has been appointed a Stanislaus County judge by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger [R-Calif.]. 

Cheryle Syvertsen [1971] and her husband, William Syvertsen [1970] have opened an educational franchise— The Tutoring Club— in Fresno. 

Franz Weinschenk [1947] hosts "Valley Writers Read" on KVPR 89.3 FM. On July 14th, he will read for "The Respite by the River" at the River Center with the San Joaquin River Parkway Conservation Trust. 

Jeremy Willey [1995] and his father, Jerry, were highlighted in a Fathers' Day tribute in "The Fresno Bee." The Willey's own and operate W&W Concrete.
