Vice President for Advancement, Dr. Peter N. Smits, held on to his title as "Mini-Bike Race Champion" for the third year at the opening ceremonies for Homecoming Week held last month. Competitors have vowed to continue training for a re-match in 2006.

Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala
Nearly 600 Fresno State Alumni, family and friends attended the Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala held at the Save Mart Center. The Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to FSAA Life Member Richard Houghten [BS ‘68] by Fresno State President John D. Welty. Additionally, the FSAA awarded $85,000 in student scholarships that evening.

Nearly 80 Fresno State Alumni ranging from the classes of 1948 to 2005 joined the 250+ member Fresno State Marching Band for Homecoming's Bulldog Boulevard and The Dog Pound, plus pre-game and half-time shows in Bulldog Stadium. It was also announced that the Norm Moglia [1959] [pictured with Dr. Gary P. Gilroy] and his wife, Patricia Moglia [1959], have established "The Norm and Patti Moglia Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band Alumni Award."

A native of Hanford, CA; Danette Leal is a junior pursuing a BA in liberal studies. She plans on completing a teaching credential in the future. "The FSAA scholarship supports my education at Fresno State," she says. "I am grateful for this gift." Currently, Danette volunteers as a tutor at the J. E. A Fresno native and a second generation Fresno State Bulldog, Brad Dawson is a freshman studying biology with options in physiology and anatomy. His parents, Ken and Lauren, also attended Fresno State. Brad achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. New Banners:

Colorful new banners highlighting five areas of distinctiveness of Fresno are being installed on and around the campus. New Endowed Professorship
in Creative Writing
Fresno State alumni James Hallowell [1955] and his wife, Coke have recently established this new endowed professorship in the Department of English, which is currently held by acclaimed writer Steve Yarbrough [pictured]. The California State University conferred honorary doctoral degrees on the Hallowell’s with the Class 2000; the Fresno State Alumni Association honored Coke Hallowell [1957] at the 2004 Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala. The Hallowell's are FSAA members.

Peace Garden to Honor: Jane Addams
Graduate student and artist Claudia Nolan [2003] life-sized statue of Jane Addams is nearing completion. Currently sculpted in clay, the statue will be cast in bronze by Arizona Bronze Atelier for installation in the Peace Garden at Fresno State next spring. The Addams' statue will join monuments of Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King, Jr. | [Online].

Pretrucci Honored
with International Award
Fresno State Emeritus Professor Vincent Petrucci has been honored with an award for his book, “A Treatise on Raisin Production, Processing and Marketing” by the International Organization of Vine and Wine which is based in Paris. Petrucci is a FSAA member.

AS President: Jennifer Reimer
Jennifer Reimer [2002], Fresno State Associated Students' President, has been elected Chair of the California State Student Association which represents 400,000 students in the 23-campus CSU system. A graduate student, she has two bachelors degree-- BS in Business and BA in Music. A former member of the Smittcamp Family Honors College, Reimer is a FSAA member.

KFSR Update
Fresno State’s non-commercial radio station, KFSR 90.7 FM, has launched a new, weekly business roundtable program called “The Pulse.” The show is hosted by Tom Jones of Worx Consulting; Fresno State alumni and FSAA Life Member Lee Lockhart [1958], executive editor of “The Business Journal,” and Dr. Timothy Stearns, director of the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Additionally, KFSR 90.7 FM has teamed with Valley Public Television, KVPT Channel 18, to broadcast the 16-year running “Valley Press” twice weekly. | [Online]

Hall of Fame: Margie Wright
Fresno State Softball Head Coach Margie Wright was inducted into the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame, the third softball individual to be inducted. At Fresno State for the past 21 years, she also coached the Gold medal winning U.S. Olympic Softball Team in Atlanta in 1996, the inaugural year of softball as an Olympic sport.

Spreading the Spirit: Timeout
Fresno State’s mascot, Timeout, was recently featured in the on-campus, student publication “The Collegian” without revealing his top-secret identity. More than a cheerleader, Timeout is a staple at many Fresno State events.

James "Jim" Boren [1972] has been named the winner of a national Media Citation by the Journalism Education Association. He is Editorial Page Editor of "The Fresno Bee" and a FSAA member. 

Jean [Bruce] Chaffee [1962] has authored a new children's book, "Azak the Orangutan Learns to Read," based on a story collected during 16 years as a volunteer at the Chaffee Zoological Gardens [Fresno Zoo]. 

Peter Cohrs [1975] is the Senior Vice President of the Surveying Department for Precision Civil Engineering, Inc. in Fresno

A. Vernon Conrad is being honored as the 2005 Agriculturist of the Year by The Greater Fresno Area Chamber of Commerce and The Big Fresno Fair on November 16, 2005. 

Paul Copeland [1976] has been hired as the Executive Director of the Africa American Historical and Cultural Museum of the San Joaquin Valley.

Robert E. Coyle [1953], a U.S. District Judge, recently dedicated the new nine-story, $140 million federal courthouse in Fresno with U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Anthony M. Kennedy. Coyle was given the Top Dog Alumni Award for the College of Social Sciences in 2003 and is a FSAA Life Member.

Natalie Dibuduo [2002] ha been added to the Public Relations team at Jeffrey Scott Advertising in Fresno. 

Olivia [Reyes] Garcia [1995] is the Managing Editor for the newly launched magazine "Mas Bakersfield." 

Mark Gardner, a former Fresno State Baseball standout, has had his Bulldog jersey, #28, officially retired. Currently the San Francisco Giants' Bullpen Coach, he had a 12-year major league career as a pitcher. Gardner was inducted in the Fresno State Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993.

Christopher Healy [2004] Expansion and Recruitment Consultant for Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc. International Headquarters based in Lexington, VA.

Garrett Jones [2003] was recently featured in "The Collegian" at Fresno State. He's the Marketing Manager for Fresno State Wines.

Robert A. "Bobby" Jones, Jr., a former Fresno State Baseball standout, has had his Bulldog jersey, #23, officially retired. Currently Fresno State's Assistant Coach [Interim], he had a 10-year career with the New York Mets and the San Diego Padres. Jones was inducted in the Fresno State Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997. 

Vincent Lavery was recently highlighted in "The Fresno Bee" for his activist efforts. A member of Peace Fresno, he was briefly featured in Michael Moore's documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" [2004].

Kermit Lynch, the owner of Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant based in Berkeley, CA opened his first wine shop specializing in French wines in 1972. The Fresno State alumnus has been named Wine Professional of the Year by the James Beard Foundation, and the French government presented him a medal and named him Chevalier de l'Ordre de Mérite Agricole.

Robert Martindale [2005] has accepted a position at Suntreat Packing and Shipping Co. in Lindsay, CA. He is an FSAA member. 

Caty Massey and Alex Perez [2000] were married on September 17, 2005. They met at Fresno State and are both FSAA members.

Scott Mayes [1996] has been named City Editor of the Amarillo Globe News in Amarillo, TX. He was formerly the Assistant City Editor with "The Bakersfield Californian" in Bakersfield, CA.

Alan Nakashima [1974] was featured in "The Fresno Bee" while attending an olive oil tasting at Fresno State.

Mark Olson [2004] has been hired as a Claim Representative for Glatfelter Claims Management, Inc. based in Stockton, CA.

Henry Perea [2001], a Fresno City Councilmember [District 7], is featured on the "Famous People" page of fresnofamous.com.

Jeffrey "Jeff" Pisoni [2002] and his brother, Mark, of Pisoni Vineyards & Vineyards in Gonzales, CA have been selected as one of the top 25 wine families worldwide for "revolutionizing the wine industry" by "Food & Wine" magazine in the October 2005 issue. Pisoni Vineyards released the labels Estate Pinot Noir in 1998 and Lucia in 2000.

Sylvia Ross, a former painter for Walt Disney Productions, has authored and illustrated "Lion Singer," a story about a boy from the Chuckchansi tribe.

Lisa Rowe [1989] has been hired Director of the Advertising Division of the "Times-Standard," which is based in Eureka, CA and publishes "The Humboldt Beacon" and "The Redwood Times."

Stephen Sobonya [1992], a personal trainer and owner of Progressive Sports Conditioning in Fresno, is featured in the November 2005 issue of "Fresno Magazine."

James C. Solon has been appointed Executive Vice President of Operations and Stores for KB Toys, Inc. KB Toys in the nation's largest mall-based specialty toy retailer with 640 stores and is based in Pittsfield, Mass.  

Jerry Tarkanian [1955], former Head Basketball Coach at Fresno State, has written [with Dan Wetzel] the recently released the book, "Runnin' Rebel: Shark Tales of 'Extra Benefits', Frank Sinatra and Winning It All." He and his wife Lois [Huter] Tarkanian [1955] donated $100,000 to the Tarkanian Book Fund for the Henry Madden Library at Fresno State.

Daniel Ward [1998] is the Vice President of Benefits Consulting for Ahart Benefit Insurance Services in Fresno. 

Kenneth D. Wheeler [1969], President of EFG Leasing in Fresno, has just been ranked No. 28 nationwide as among the fastest-growing private companies by "Inc." magazine. Wheeler is a FSAA member.

Robert Weibel [1990], a local artist, was recently featured in "The Collegian" at Fresno State. He is a FSAA member. 

Four Fresno State Alumni were recently recognized as a "Local Hero of the Year" by KVPT Channel 18 and Union Bank of California for Hispanic Heritage Month: Richard Arenas [1981], known for his sculptures that depict farm workers. Daniel Cheney [1976], owner of Century 21 Dan Cheney and Associates; Venancio Gaona, retiree from Fresno City College and co-founded El Concilio de Fresno; and Rosalinda Tovar, the owner of Rosalinda's Mexican Cuisine in Selma, CA.

Five Fresno State Alumnae were selected as one of the Top 10 Business and Professional Women of the Year by the Marjaree Mason Center: Debra [Harris] Kotler [1985], Executive Director of the Golden State Psychology Internship Association at Alliant University; Mary R. Lopez [1988, 1991], a Registered Nurse with Community Medical Centers in Fresno; Cesilia "CeCe" [Lomeli] Perez [1984, 2002], with the Holy Cross Clinic at the Poverello House; Grace Yang, of the Tzu Chi Foundation's Fresno Service Center; and Silvia Ybarra [1992], Vice President of Dataworks Educational Research.
