Patrick Cary, a junior mechanical engineering student, was honored at the 38th annual Volunteer of the Year luncheon. With a 3.7 GPA, Cary volunteers an average of 12 hours per week with Jumpstart Fresno. A member of the Smittcamp Family Honors College, he’s also volunteered for more than 200 hours as a firefighter with the Fresno County Fire Department.

Book: "California Grapes" by Karen Adler.Karen Adler [1985] has published her fifth children's book, "California Grapes." She's also the author of "A Story About Raisins" and "Maybe Donna Wants a Cheeseburger," among others.

Photo: Armen Alchian.Armen Alchian, professor emeritus of economics and founder of the "UCLA tradition" in economics, has established the Armen A. Alchian Chair in Economic Theory at UCLA. He attended Fresno State, but graduated from Stanford in 1934.

A former football coach for Bullard High [Fresno], as well as two stints at Arizona State, he's also coached for the Los Angeles Rams and the Washington Redskins. He was the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, which won Super Bowl XXXIV and was subsequently named head coach. Currently, he's the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.

Also the Dean's Medalist for the College of Arts and Humanities, she completed her M.A. in English, Literature option, with a 3.94 GPA.
