New FSAA Logo and Tagline
The Board of Directors of the FSAA, on the recommendation from the Membership & Marketing Committee, has approved a new official logo that will be implemented in the near future. Additionally, a new official tagline, “Your Bulldog Connection. For Life.” was approved. Both the logo and tagline were developed with the assistance of JSA/Jeffrey Scott Advertising.

New Associate Director for FSAA
Amy DeGraw [2003] has been appointed Associate Director of Alumni Relations for the Fresno State Alumni Association. Previously, she was the Assistant Events Coordinator for the Office of the President. An FSAA member, DeGraw begins her new assignment on July 1^st.

95^th Commencement
Fresno State's recent commencement, held May 20 at the Save Mart Center, recognized and conferred 4,080 bachelor, 870 master and seven joint doctoral degrees [4,957 total] held May 20 at the Save Mart Center.  The California State University and Fresno State also conferred honorary doctoral degrees on aerospace industry innovator Sam F. Iacobellis [pictured right] and press freedom advocate James McClatchy [pictured left]. Iacobellis, a 1952 graduate of Fresno State, pioneered the B1-B bomber; McClatchy was withThe McClatchy Company, based in Sacramento, Calif. [He passed away unexpectedly one week later].

In Honor of Harold H. Haak
President John D. Welty has announced that the fourth floor of the soon-to-be-built campus library will be named The Harold H. Haak Administrative Center, in honor of the late-Dr. Haak, former Fresno State president from 1980 to 1991. His widow, Betty Haak, is pictured with President Welty.

Journey of Hope
Daniel Van Dongen, a master’s degree student studying occupational therapy, plans to pedal from Oregon to Washington, DC on a 4,000 mile journey, to raise funds for people with disabilities. The trip is a program of Push America, a fundraising arm of Pi Kappa Phi.

New Dean for College of Ag Sciences
Dr. Charles Boyer of Oregon State University has been appointed the Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology. He begins his duties on July 1^st.

Navy Preceptor
of the Year
Dr. Steven D. Walker, professor and chair of the Department of Criminology has been named Preceptor of the Year by the Navy and Danya International, Inc. for consulting with the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program at Naval Air Station, Lemoore.

Student Volunteer of the Year
Patrick Cary, a junior mechanical engineering student, was honored at the 38^th annual Volunteer of the Year luncheon. With a 3.7 GPA, Cary volunteers an average of 12 hours per week with Jumpstart Fresno. A member of the Smittcamp Family Honors College, he’s also volunteered for more than 200 hours as a firefighter with the Fresno County Fire Department.

Thespian Winner
Brandon Petrie, a Theatre Arts major, won the Regional Competition at the American College Theatre Festival. For the second consecutive year, he also competed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Petrie also won an award for best classical actor.

CSU Summer Arts

Christina Clark Honored
Bulldog Softball shortstop Christina Clark [#14] has been named to the 2006 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-America Team. The three-time All-America shortstop and three-time WAC Player of the Year wrapped up her stellar career by ranking in five NCAA Division I all-time career categories.

Bulldog Baseball Wins WAC
The Bulldog Baseball team has captured the WAC title. Congratulations to Todd Sandell [#5], Coach Mike Batesole and the team.

Golf Ties for 3^rd Place

Karen Adler [1985] has published her fifth children's book, "California Grapes." She's also the author of "A Story About Raisins" and "Maybe Donna Wants a Cheeseburger," among others.

Armen Alchian, professor emeritus of economics and founder of the "UCLA tradition" in economics, has established the Armen A. Alchian Chair in Economic Theory at UCLA. He attended Fresno State, but graduated from Stanford in 1934.

Frank Arnold was referred to as Fresno's "Ambassador of Art" by "Fresno Magazine" in the April, 2005 issue. In addition to being an artist, he owns and operates Ashford Advertising. 

Reza Assemi [1998] was featured as the "HIS Man of the Month for June" in the May/June 2006 issue of "HIS Magazine." Assemi, who spearheaded Pearl Studio and Broadway Studios, was referred to as "one of a kind and is on his way to successfully changing the face of an entire neighborhood, one building at a time."

Jon Bettencourt [1997] won the 79th annual Fresno City Amateur on Memorial Day weekend. As a student, he was a member of the Bulldog golf team.

Thomas Boyajian [1966] is the recipient of the Courage Award from the Kennedy Club of the San Joaquin Valley for his efforts on behalf of all the citizens of the Fresno community. He represents the people of District One for the City of Fresno.

Karen Bradley [1978] owns a 1961 VW Beetle painted as an exact replica of "Herbie the Love Bug."

Nathan Forrest Carr [2003] and Michelle Kay Wilkinson are engaged to be married on June 24, 2006 in Clovis.  

Kevin S. Cooper [2006] was awarded the President's Medal at Fresno State's 95th Commencement Ceremonies held at the Save Mart Center. He was also the Craig School of Business Dean’s Medalist and completed his B.S. in business administration, finance option. As a member of the Bulldog football team, he was the top academic performer and was named to the Academic All-WAC team for the 2004 season. Cooper is an FSAA member. 

Helen Crawford, a professor of psychology in the College of Sciences at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title "Professor Emerita" by its Board of Visitors. She has been a member of the Virginia Tech community since 1987.

Jerry Dyer [1984] was highlighted in the April 2006 issue of "Fresno Magazine." He's the Chief of Police for the City of Fresno.

Alfred "Al" Galvez [1980] is the Director of Government and Community Affairs for Pacific Gas & Electric Company.

Brad R. Hill [1977] has been confirmed as the newest member of the Fifth District Court of Appeal. He was nominated to the bench by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger [R-Calif.]. He is an FSAA Life member. 

Anunciacio "Nancy" Hoff [1966] was featured in "The Fresno Bee" as a instructor of nursing at Fresno City College. A native of the Philippines, Hoff has a degree from the University of Santo Tomas [Manila] and a Master's from Fresno State.

Brandon Eugene Lehr [2003] and Shari Jean Gunter are engaged to be married on June 16, 2006 in Fresno.

Anna M. Levin-Ware [1970], a Holocaust survivor, was recently honored on the Floor of the California State Assembly by Assemblymember Juan Arambula [D-31st Dist.]. She is retired from the Department of Theatre Arts.

John Lovejoy [1973], Special Projects Manager for the City of Clovis, is overseeing the construction of a new $9.5 million sewage pump plant-- designed to look like an early 1900s farmhouse.

Diane Makasian [1992] owns and operates Retro Rag in Fresno's Tower District. The store was recently featured in "The New York Times" for selling "pristine vintage clothing" and stocking "disco duds, 80's T-shirts and classic 50's chiffon dresses." 

Mike Martz [1974], a former Fresno State tight end, recently returned to visit his alma mater. [Pictured with Pat Hill, Fresno State football coach]. A former football coach for Bullard High [Fresno], as well as two stints at Arizona State, he's also coached for the Los Angeles Rams and the Washington Redskins. He was the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, which won Super Bowl XXXIV and was subsequently named head coach. Currently, he's the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.

Steven Negro [1976] has retired from the Salinas Rural Fire District after 15 years there. He started his firefighter career at the age of 16 as a volunteer with the Soquel Fire District.

Phyllis Neufeld [1972] is an artist that paints colorful watercolors that are inspired by the beauty and bounty of God's creation. The Fresno County Employees Credit Union features her distinctive portraits of grapes on the checks and credit cards used by its 30,000 members. 

Jeremy Oswald was featured in the article, "A Spirited Discussion," in the May/June 2006 issue of "HIS Magazine." He is a co-owner and operator of CityVantage.

Craig Pedro [1980] has been named chief administrator officer of the County of Tuolumne in Sonora, Calif.

Brian G. Pierce [2004] and Codi L. Dorrell are engaged to be married on August 26, 2006.

Henry T. Perea [2001], who serves the people of District 7 for the City of Fresno, has been selected for a Fannie Mae Foundation Fellowship to attend Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government later this summer.

Tara Powers [2005], a graduate student, has won the Student Leadership Award at the statewide CSU Alcohol and Other Drugs Education Conference. She recently received a "Thumbs Up" for this honor from "The Fresno Bee." 

Steven Roza [1993] races a midget car [#20], which is owned by his father, Robert "Bob" Roza [1976]. They are registered members of the Bay Cities Racing Association.

Mark J. Salazar [1993] has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with the Fresno Police Department. 

APS Sidhu, MD, MBA [2005], has been elected to the steering committee for the California Culture Change Coalition. He is an FSAA member.

David James Smith [1978], author of "The Boys of San Joaquin," a mystery about three kids and a half-chewed $10 bill, has won the 2006 Edgar Allen Poe Award in the juvenile category.

Theresa Speake [1983] recently visited to campus to announce the First Hispanic Youth Symposium in the western U.S., which will be held at Fresno State. She is the Director of the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Economic Impact and Diversity and an FSAA Life member. 

Ashley [Newton] Swearengin [1994, 1997] was featured in "The Fresno Bee" publication "Get Out!" She's Chief Operations Officer for the Regional Jobs Initiative with the Office of Community and Economic Development.

Dan Taylor [1980], sports director at KFSN Channel 30 [ABC] in Fresno has been presented the 2006 Jim Tucker Award by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism. Taylor was honored for "journalistic achievement throughout this 28-year career at KFSN." 

Gary A. Taylor [1983] was promoted to Colonel with the US Air Force. He is the Commander of the 144th Operations Group at the Fresno Air National Guard Base.

Lejla Tricic [2002, 2006] was named the University Graduate Medalist at Fresno State's recent commencement ceremonies. Also the Dean's Medalist for the College of Arts and Humanities, she completed her M.A. in English, Literature option, with a 3.94 GPA.
