Fresno State students recently presented a new home that they helped build to a Clovis family of seven. This marks the eighth house constructed by University HOPE [Housing OPportunities in Education], which is in now in its 12th year.

Christian Vitters [Baseball] and Katherina Winterhalter [Tennis] and Lucia Sainz [Tennis] have been named the 2005-06 Fresno State Athletes of the Year in a vote of Fresno-area media members. Photo: Katherina Winterhalter and Lucia Sainz, tennis.Vitters was also named WAC Player of the Year and First-Team All-WAC shortstop. As a draft-eligible junior, he was selected in the 10
th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Oakland Athletics. Winterhalter and Sainz were the heart and strength of the women’s tennis team that won its fifth consecutive WAC title. The Bulldog duo also won five straight matches to capture the prestigious Northwest Regional Championship.

A former 20-year baseball coach at McLane High [Fresno], he was a member of the 1959 Fresno State baseball team that reached the College World Series.

Photo: Pete Mehas.Peter "Pete" Mehas [1962] is retiring as Superintendent of Fresno County Schools. A celebration, in his honors, will be held on July 29, 2006 at the Fresno Exhibit Hall. Proceeds benefit the endowment for the Peter G. Mehas Professorship in Educational Leadership and Policy at California State University, Fresno. An FSAA Life member, he was named Distinguished Alumnus by the FSAA in 2002.
