Fresno State Olive Oil.Estate Reserve Oil Wins Awards
Fresno State Orchards’ Estate Reserve Olive Oil—Fresno State’s inaugural pressing—has won a bronze medal at the San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival. The “olive for oil” project is conducted on a 22-acre block of super high-density planting on Fresno State’s Agricultural Laboratory. Fresno State's creative writing professor Steve Yarbrough’s newest novel, "The End of California" [Random House] was selected as one of the Kansas City Star’s 100 Notable Books of 2006. Published in June and a Book-of-the-Month Club selection in July, the book was selected among the 27 novels chosen by the newspaper’s panel and by book readers.

A beekeeping project with the Plant Science Department in the spring is now producing jars of honey this fall. Bee Club members have produced approximately 400 bottles from six beehives—with 30,000 to 60,000 insects per hive. The 8-oz. jars are available for $5.95 each at the Farm Market. Details: 278-4511.

Women's tennis player, Melanie Gloria, was named WAC Player of the Year for 2006. She's a sophomore from Montreal, Canada.

Men's tennis player, Jakub Cech, was named WAC Player of the Year for 2006. He is a senior from Prague, Czech Republic.

The issue celebrates Fresno County’s sesqui-centennial and highlights “150 people who put [Fresno] on the map”—including notable Bulldog alumni— Roy Christopher [1957, 1961], award-winning set designer; Robert E. Coyle [1953], Senior US District Judge— U.S. Congress has approved legislation to name the new 9th District Federal Courthouse in honor of Judge Coyle upon his retirement from the bench; Doris Gates, award-winning children’s book author; Coke Hallowell [1957], environmental preservationist; Hugo Morales, founder of Radio Bilingue; Paul O’Neil [1960], former Secretary of the U.S. Treasury; and Theresa Avillar-Speake, Director of Office minority Economic Impact and Diversity with the US Dept. of Energy. Congressman Jim Consta [20th Dist., Calif.]James "Jim" Costa [1974] has been re-elected to the U.S. Congress to represent the people of District 20 [Calif.]. A past recipient of a FSAA Top Dog Alumni Award, he is an FSAA Life member.

Greg Stach. [Photo by Peter Robertson].Gregory "Greg" Stach [1992], the winemaker and partner of Kanzler Vineyards, has received a 93 rating from "Wine Spectator" [Nov. 30, 2006] for its inaugural release 2004 Kanzler Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast.

Fred Stein.Fred Stein has been presented the 2006 Bulldog Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He and his wife, Dee, are FSAA life members.

Raymond Valdez. [Photo by Kelley Nelson].Raymond Valdez is the head chef at Lantana Steakhouse in Fresno. He was featured in the Oct. 2006 issue of “Nouveh” magazine.

Mike Villines.Michael "Mike" Villines [1990] has been re-elected to the California State Assembly [R-Dist. 29]. Additionally, the Republicans elected Villines on a unanimous vote as minority leader. He is an FSAA member.

Eastwood.Dashaun "Eastwood" Woodard, a Hip-Hop artist based in Los Angeles, has been signed to a recording deal with Jaded Entertainment with a highly anticipated album, "Making History." As a student, Eastwood was a member of Fresno State's Men's basketball team in 1999.

Blong Xiong.Blong Xiong [1998] has been elected to represent the people of District One on the Fresno City Council.
