In the past decade, more than $500,000 has been donated by the FSAA to students. This academic year, the FSAA provides $100,000 plus in scholarships to students based on academic achievement and financial need. The FSAA allocates 10% of annual membership fees to a Student Scholarship Endowment Fund. The FSAA ranks No. 1 out of the alumni associations on the 23 campuses of the CSU system in student scholarship giving!

Alumni Spotlight
Scott Fichtner is the alumni spotlight for August.Scott Fichtner [1998] comes from a Fresno State family: his father, Edwin Fichtner [1962]; his mother, Patricia (Daldin) Fichtner [1964]; and his brother Edwin Fichtner [1997]. Scott is an Agronomist for Western Farm Service and supervises the South-West Division Research Team. Scott majored in Plant Science while attending California State University, Fresno and received his Master's degree from Texas A&M University [2001] and his PhD from Colorado State University [2007].

The cognitive science program at California State University, Fresno recently completed the approval process for its new major and minor, and one of its students already is turning his experience with the program into a career in the field. [Online]

California State University, Fresno researchers and geography students are getting a bird’s eye view of Central Valley air quality, hoisting a 16-foot-long orange blimp high above campus to measure ozone levels, which in high concentrations can cause heart and respiratory problems. Findings ultimately will be published and made available to policymakers. [Online]

Chef Klaus Tenbergen, culinary science professor at California State University, Fresno and a master baker, has earned the Master Certified Food Executive (MCFE) certification from the International Food Service Executives Association, one of the most difficult to attain. [Online]


John Suen. John Suen named to EPA expert panel
California State University, Fresno professor Dr. John Suen, a specialist in hydrogeology, has been appointed to an expert review panel of a national “report card” on the environment by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA will use the report’s information in its strategic planning and decision making. [Online]

Fresno State's Viticulture and Enology Research Center sought out wine 'supertasters'. Wine Supertasters Sought

An enology research team from the Viticulture and Enology Research Center (VERC) at California State University, Fresno looked for 16 wine-tasting volunteers, including supertasters: people with a rare genetic trait that enables them to “supertaste” certain foods and flavors. They are chosen so they can serve on a panel that is part of an Agricultural Research Initiative-funded study designed to determine how a person’s taste sensory perceptions affect wine enjoyment.  Fresno State Alumni Class Notes

Jennifer Brower. Jennifer Brower is among about 100 volunteers who helped rehabilitate injured or orphaned animals through the Fresno Wildlife Rehabilitation Service. They recently released 32 rehabilitated barn owls back into the wild.

Glorybelle Cendana.Glorybelle Cendana [1992],  has been running marathons (26.2 miles) since 2003. On April 16, 2007 she finished the 111th Boston Marathon in a personal best time of 3:29:19. Her next goal is to run an Ultra Marathon and eventually run in the Western States 100. She is a police officer with the City of San Jose in California, married to Michael and has 3 children.

The set of the musical "Can-Can".Roy Christopher [1957] is the set designer for the upcoming revival of the Cole Porter-Abe Burrows musical "Can-Can" at the Pasadena Playhouse. He has received a total of 35 Emmy nominations, 16 of them for his work on the Oscar telecast. Christopher has won a total of eight Emmys, six for his work on Oscar sets. He is an FSAA Life member.

Logo: MyTuition.comKevin Dillon  [2001] is the Co-Founder and President of the recently established MyTuition.com. MyTuition.com was created for students and families seeking to fund a college or university education. Dillon is also COO of Electronic Recyclers, Inc., an electronic waste collector and recycler based in Fresno.

"Augie" Garrido. August "Augie" Garrido [1961], the head coach of the Texas Longhorns, was featured by ESPN as one of the NCAA's winningest coaches. Garrido was given the Top Dog Alumni Award for the Department of Athletics by the Fresno State Alumni Association in 2002.

Ryan Giannetta. Ryan Giannetta [2001] has been promoted to Project Logistics Manager for the Disneyland Resorts Hotels & Downtown Disney. He has been "Part of the Magic of the Walt Disney Company" for the past five years.

Laine Hendricks. Laine Hendricks [2005] has joined NPCA as Program Coordinator for the Central Valley Field Office.

Glen Kajiyama. Glen Kajiyama [1977] was named federal security director for Honolulu International Airport.

Akinsanya Kambon. Akinsanya Kambon [1974], artist and owner of Gallery Kambon, was featured in the PRESS-TELEGRAM for his proactive movements towards re-acquainting today's youth with their cultural pasts and ethnic identities. I

Steven Kister. Steven Kister was featured in the article "Growing A Life," which appeared in The Fresno Bee. He owns a family farm in Kerman, CA where he cultivates raisins and almonds.

Michael McHatten.Michael McHatten [1988] was appointed to the position of director of administrative services for the City of Madera.

Bryan Moe. Bryan Moe [2003] was named director of the Central California Small Business Development Center (SBDC) operated by the Craig School of Business at California State University, Fresno.

Michael Moffitt. Michael Moffitt [1987] was appointed as Indiana Wesleyan University's vice president for student development.

Linda (Lloyd) Pitts. Linda (Lloyd) Pitts [1973], and her paintings, were featured in THE FRESNO BEE. She lost part of her vision in one eye two years ago, but was determined to continue painting. Her work was shown at the Margaret Hudson Gallery in the downtown Fresno ArtHop.

Frank Ramos. Frank Ramos [1960] served with the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Small Business Administration in Washington, as the Associate Deputy Administrator for Management and Administration and, most recently at the Department of Defense at the Pentagon. In 2005, Ramos was awarded California State University, Fresno's "Top Dog" alumnus award.

Cecil Rhodes. Cecil Rhodes [1973], who created the criminal-justice program at California State University, Stanislaus, has retired.

 "The Secret Servant", by Daniel Silva. Daniel Silva [1983] recently published "The Secret Servant", the seventh in a series chronicling the exploits of an Israeli secret agent and art restorer.

Ashley Swearengin.Ashley Swearengin, director of the Office of Community and Economic Development at Fresno State, has been appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to the California Commission for Economic Development. The commission serves as a bipartisan advisory board on economic development issues to the governor and Legislature.

Nick Watney. Nick Watney [2003] competed in the British Open in Carnoustie, Scotland. This is Watney's second experience in a major, having won previously in the New Orleans Open and the Zurich Classic.
