Dr. Peter Smits and Peter RobertsonThe nationally recognized IAMFRESNOSTATE project won two prestigious awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) at its District VII conference in Las Vegas. “The IAMFRESNOSTATE project is cutting edge,” said Peter N. Smits, Fresno State’s vice president for advancement. “It’s a first for all academic circles from coast-to-coast.” [read more].

Dr. John SuenDr. John Suen, a professor of hydrogeology at Fresno State, heads the Foothill/Mountain Water Capacity Study Project, a five-year, more than $5 million investigation of how much water is available now and in the future in that fast-growing region. Students will help with the research. Dr. Suen has worked to develop ways to find and recover more groundwater in the foothills to meet ever-higher demand and be sure there's enough to sustain development [read more].

Fidelity Logo The Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund (“Gift Fund”) and Campus Compact, announced they are jointly launching a new program – Students4GivingSM – that seeks to inspire young people to get more involved with philanthropy. As a part of the program, five academic institutions – including California State University, Fresno – and their participating students will each receive oversight of a $15,000 donor-advised fund to be used for future grant recommendations within their communities [read more].

Nancy Myers SimsNancy Myers Sims has been appointed to serve as the Director of Sponsored Programs in the Department of Research and Sponsored Programs. Ms. Sims has 26 years of experience in sponsored programs. She arrived on campus in 1997 where her activities have focused on grant development with faculty in the Colleges of Science and Mathematics, Agricultural Sciences and Technology, and Social Sciences.

Alumni Spotlight

Tom BosenkoTom Bosenko (2000) was praised by his local Shasta County newspaper where he has served as Sheriff since 2006. He has shown his commitment to the community by increasing communication between the department and the residents of Shasta County.

MannaCongratulations to Matt Manna (2005) and Megan Kooyman, they announced their engagement in their local Lodi newspaper. Mr. Manna studied Ag Business while at Fresno State and is currently a grape grower.

Darius WestDaruis West (2002) is making a difference by bridging the divide between urban students and curriculum. His kindergarten students enjoy Hip-Hop Scholastics as they learn to count and recite the alphabet.

Mary KerrMary Kerr (2004) is a teacher for Poway High School in Poway, CA. Poway Unified School District has given her the responsibility of resorting the high school's agricultural science program. This program is for students interested in pursuing careers in agriculture. Her restoration plans include a garden, a greenhouse and a small animal lab.

Jon AffonsoJon Affonso (1999) will be opening an urban winery in Sacramento's Richards Boulevard area. Affonso hopes his winery, Rail Ridge Cellars, will produce wine by the end of summer.

Pat GutierrezPat Gutierrez (1965) keeps the beat after four decades of teaching at Clovis High School. He has since come back out of retirement, a second time, to continue teaching the folklorico dance team and the marimba band.

Chris MangelsChris Mangels (1996) of the Enchanted Playhouse starred in a 90-minute one-man version of the the classic Dickens tale "A Christmas Carol." Chris is currently a College of the Sequoias theater instructor.

Hero Alert logoMatt Beloof is currently a student at Fresno State. While shopping at See's Candy in Visalia he saved a fellow shopper who was choking on a piece of candy. The shopper expelled the candy after Beloof administered the Heimlich maneuver. Matt is a psychology major and has an interest in law enforcement as a career. His CPR and first aid training sure paid off, way to go Matt!

Jerilyn ChumanJerilyn Chuman (1974) is currently the Dean of Counseling Services and Special Programs at Saddleback College, where she has worked since 1979. She earned her bachelor's degree in Sociology.

Derek MaddenDerek Madden (1988) recently published  his book about local wildlife, "Magpies and Mayflies: An Introduction to the Plants and Animals of the central Valley and Sierra Foothills." He also illustrated the book himself. Madden has earned both his bachelor's and master's degree in biology.

Amy ShuklianAmy Shuklian (1987) was elected to Visalia's City Council after a successful campaign. She graduated from California State University, Fresno with a bachelor's degree in recreational administration.

 

Logan MankinsLogan Mankins and Lorenzo Neal were selected to the NFL Pro Bowl. Mankins, a third-year guard for the 14-0 New England Patriots, is making his first appearance in the annual game in Honolulu. Neal, a fullback on a 9-5 San Diego Chargers squad, earned his fourth invite and third straight despite breaking his right leg in a win at Tennessee on Dec. 9.

(1974), vice president of academic affairs at Eastern New Mexico University since 2005, will become the next president of Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.
