Take A Student to Eat (TASTE)
FSAA is hosting a new mentoring program! TASTE allows you to take two students to lunch and talk to them about your profession or industry. This is a great way for alumni to give back directly to students. Mentors can help current students learn to network and carry professional conversations. This is a great opportunity for the busy professional wanting to volunteer their time! Click here for an easy application.

Out of Area Receptions - Attend a reception for incoming Bulldogs this month.  At these receptions alumni serve in an informal capacity by chatting with new students and their parents.  We will be in Salinas, Gilroy, Modesto, Ventura, Santa Maria, and Bakersfield.  Click on the city to view the location and date.  Contact Katie at 278-4669 to RSVP.

In Memoriam -
Bill Forbes (1948) passed away on February 19th.  Mr. Forbes was a long time FSAA board member and was a dedicated Fresno State alumnus.   He was the driving force behind the construction of the Smittcamp Alumni House as the Chair of the Alumni House Building Campaign.

The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education recently named California State University, Fresno among the top 100 schools for Hispanic students.  In the 2006-07 academic year 860 Hispanic students earned bachelor's degrees and 163 earned master's degrees at Fresno State. [read full article]

Valley artist's sculptures to be featured at Fresno State
The bronze sculptures of graduate student Claudia Nolan will be on display in the Conley Gallery at California State University, Fresno on Feb. 28 to March 7.  Nolan, a painter, sculptor and computer artist, investigates the contemporary dilemmas of a fast-paced world in her exhibition, "Contravening Postulates." Armenian Film Festival - Speakers planned in March
The Armenian Studies Program at Fresno State and co-sponsors have planned three programs in March, beginning March 7 with the ninth annual Armenian Film Festival.  All three events are free and open to the public.  The film festival will be at 7 p.m. in the Grosse Industrial Technology Building, Room 101 (corner of Barstow and Campus Drive). President Welty, CSU officials to speak at 52 churches
Fresno State President John D. Welty joined California State University officials in bringing the college message to thousands of prospective students and their families at the Third Annual CSU Super Sundays.  CSU presidents, trustees, the chancellor, and other leaders will address the congregations to engage the community by encouraging students to go to college. Fresno State will host Levine Prize-winning poet
Lynn Aarti Chandhok of Brooklyn, N.Y., whose "The View from Zero Bridge" won the 2006 Philip Levine Prize in Poetry and has recently garnered national attention, will read from her collection at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at California State University, Fresno. [read full article]


Maddy Institute hosts ‘Fiscal Wake-Up Tour’ March 6
The Maddy Institute at Fresno State is hosting the bipartisan Concord Coalition’s “Fiscal Wake-Up Tour,” which will address federal budget issues. The event is scheduled for Thursday, March 6 in the Ambassador Room of the Piccadilly Inn University, 4961 N. Cedar Ave.  A press conference at 11 a.m. will be followed by a luncheon talk. Tickets to the luncheon are $45 per person or $320 for a table of eight. Tickets can be reserved by calling 559.294.9119 or by e-mailing Jennifer Johnson at jejohnson@csufresno.edu.
 

Fresno State receives national achievement award for service
The Corporation for National and Community Service honored California State University, Fresno, today (Feb. 11) at the American Council on Education (ACE) annual conference with a Special Achievement Award as part of the second annual President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Fresno State was one of two minority-serving institutions that received the special achievement award in recognition of its commitment to service. [read full article]

University Lecture Series
Yusef Komunyakaa, born in Bogalusa, Louisiana, is the author of twelve books of poetry, among them Neon Vernacular: New and Selected Poems, which won the Pulitzer Prize. The New York Times calls his writing “fiercely autobiographical” poetry, with much of it based on his childhood in  the rural South and his experience as a young

Alumni Spotlight

Sergio Balli (1999) was made a partner with Champlain Chiropractic in Fresno.  Mr. Balli majored in Math and Science at Fresno State.  He recently graduated Cum Laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic. 

George Tanimoto (1960) will be featured at the Porterville Art Gallery. Tanimoto's work includes everything from fun paintings to beauteous mountains and breathtaking landscapes.
 

Ellen Gorelick (1979) will be retiring from the Tulare Historical Museum. She worked there for more then 25 years and will be missed by all co-workers and regulars. 

Michael Brady (2002) and Allison Zulik are happy to announce their engagement. The wedding ceremony will take place on May 24, 2008 at the Visalia Country Club.

Michael Leven (1991) was named the president of Madera Vintners Association. Madera County is one of California's oldest wine growing regions and it is developing excellent wine.  Thanks in large part to Fresno State alumni!  He was featured in an article in the Madera Tribune.

Mary McCarthy (2005) and Joshua Howard are happy to announce their engagement. The wedding ceremony will take place in March at the Visalia Country Club.
