Doug Hansen, Associate Professor
Doug Hansen received his BA and MA in art from California State University, Fresno and was awarded the Dean's Graduate Medal in the College of Arts and Humanities.

Hansen's professional career as an illustrator and graphic artist developed during 23 years as a staff artist in the Editorial Art Department of The Fresno Bee newspaper. Most memorable are thoughtful, interpretive, color illustrations in the Bee's Vision section and two published volumes of Fresno Sketchbook which collected hundreds of his pen-and-ink renderings of Fresno. He received the Fresno City and County Historical Society's Historic Preservation Award for that work.

Highlights of his freelance career include medal designs for CSUF. Fresno's centennial poster in 1985, and art for a billboard prop used in the movie I Love Trouble.

In 1997 the Fresno Art Museum exhibited a 128-foot mural entitled The San Joaquin River: Gravity and Light. Doug collaborated with family members Janice, Keith and Craig Hansen to complete the drawn and painted work. In 2000, the Fresno Arts Council directors honored the four artists with the Horizon Award, for contributions to the community through the arts.

Charles Shields, Professor
Charles Shields received his BFA and MFA from the Art Center College of Design. His professional work in the field of graphic design has focused on corporate identity, poster design, and packaging design. In addition he has done many diverse projects including illustrating a cover for Rolling Stone magazine, illustrating a book that received the New York Times "Children's Book of the Year" award, designing props for a Steven Spielberg motion picture, and designing a series of Web sites for directories of European capitals.

Charles has won numerous awards from many sources, including: the Society of Illustrators of New York, the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, the Art Directors Club of New York, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the American Graphic Design Awards, the American Advertising Awards, the Summit Awards, the Clio Awards, and a Silver Medal, Lifetime Achievement award from the American Advertising Federation. His work has been recognized in Print and Communication Arts magazines and exhibited in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. He has been published in more than 60 books in the US, Japan, China and Germany.

Martin R. Valencia, Associate Professor
Martin Valencia is a graphic designer and an educator. He complements the CSUF graphic design faculty after having been employed at the University of Arizona as a graphic design supervisor and adjunct professor. He received his BFA degree in graphic design with dual major in illustration from the Northern Arizona University and his MFA degree in graphics and illustration from the University of Arizona. He received a Post-BAC degree in Art Education from the University of Arizona and holds a K-12 Art teaching certificate from the State of Arizona. He is also currently working on his PhD in Education with an emphasis in literacy and technology.

In the professional realm, Professor Valencia is working in conjunction with the Health and Psychological Services at CSUF as a creative director in implementing a Social Norms Campaign to Reduce Alcohol Abuse.

Professor Valencia's research and interests include: Design's cultural, sociohistorical context; Synectics; Semiotics; Design as an educational tool; Visual Literacy and Technology; and Children's Book Illustration.
