The area of Studio Art encourages students to explore a wide area of aesthetic and cultural experience.

Courses

Art 1 - Art Forms

An introduction to art/seeing and appreciating the visual world around us.

Art 13 - Design

Exploration of basic art concepts through two- and three-dimensional design problems.

Art 20 - Drawing

Introductory experiences in drawing using observation, imagination, and expressive means.

Art 21 - Figure Drawing

Focuses on developing abilities in observation, composition, and expression through drawing the human figure.

Art 24 - Printmaking

Introduction to the printmaking processes of intaglio, lithography, and woodblock printing.

Art 25 - Lithography

Explores the process of printing drawings on stone and metal by the planographic process.

Art 26 - Intaglio Processes

Printing in the intaglio process using techniques of etching, drypoint, aquatint, and softground on metal plates.

Art 27 - Screenprinting

Investigation into techniques of printing with a screen. Paper, film, tusche, and glue techniques for creating printing stencils are explored.

Art 30 - Photography

Basic theoretical and practical aspects of black and white photography as an art form.

Art 40 - Painting

An introduction to concepts, materials, and processes in contemporary painting, with an emphasis on individual creative exploration.

Art 45 - Watercolor

Introduction to techniques in watercolor painting with emphasis on transparencies.

Art 50 - Sculpture

Introductory exploration of creative expression of ideas and aesthetic concepts through sculptural form.

Art 60 - Beginning Ceramics

A survey of ceramic materials and their functions in t he arts. Covers basic studio practices in the handbuilding processes, glazing and throwing on the potters wheel.

Art 101 - Content and Form

Introduction to the problems of the modern/postmodern debate through first, a historical analysis of structuralism and post structuralism, and second, the application of these ideas to art production.

Art 103 - Guest Artists

Seminar with experienced guest artists.

Art 106 - Art Tours

Explore the extraordinary art and artistic experience in California by touring museums and galleries in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Art 107 - 2-D Computer Art

Introductory 2-dimensional computer art integrating painting, drawing and design graphics.

Art 112 - Gallery Techniques

Introduction to museum practices related to exhibition selection, design, and installation techniques.

Art 113 - Design

Continuation of the exploration of two- and three-dimensional design problems.

Art 116 - Interaction of Color

Interaction of color as developed by Joseph Albers. Includes basic design principles in connection with color work.

Art 117 - 3-D Computer Art

Introductory 3-dimensional computer art integrating video-animation, sculpture, and design.

Art 120 - Drawing

Investigation of advanced concepts through the techniques of the drawing medium.

Art 121 - Figure Drawing

The human figure and its relevancy to advanced drawing concepts and techniques.

Art 125 - Lithography

Advanced work in stone and metal plate printing in both black and color inks.

Art 126 - Intaglio Processes

Offers advanced work in intaglio printing processes such as etching, drypoint, and aquatint in black ink as well as color.

Art 127 - Screenprinting

Investigation into techniques of printing with a screen. Paper, film, tusche, and glue techniques for creating printing stencils are explored.

Art 130 - Photography

Advanced photography. Areas of potential emphasis include: black and white, color, history, and appreciation.

Art 133 - Alternative Imagery in Photography

Approached to nontraditional photography with emphasis on producing personal imagery.

Art 140 - Intermediate Painting

Individual investigation of advanced aesthetic concepts.

Art 141 - Advanced Painting

Emphasis on individual involvement in the painting process aiming toward advanced formal and technical expression.

Art 142 - Mixed Media

Exploration of collage, transfer, assemblage, and other experimental mixed media techniques.

Art 145 - Watercolor

Advanced painting with emphasis on transparencies.

Art 152 - Intermediate Sculpture

Continued investigation into the experiential application of selected methods and materials of sculpture.

Art 153 - Advanced Sculpture

Individual involvement in the studio practice of sculpture with emphasis focused on conceptual development, refinement of technique, choice of materials, professional presentation, and portfolio.

Art 155 - Sculpture: Foundry

Foundry techniques: mold-making, wax sculpting, metallurgical technology, and patination.

Art 160 - Intermediate Ceramics

Emphasis on promoting a greater awareness of form as developed on the potter's wheel. Concentrated study of surface treatments and their integration with clay forms.

Art 161 - Advanced Ceramics

Individual involvement in the studio practice of sculpture with emphasis focused on conceptual development, refinement of technique, choice of materials, professional presentation, and portfolio.

Art 165 - Ceramic Glazes

Concentrated study in glazes through the empirical methods with discussion of historical and technical integration of glazes with clay forms.

Art 166 - Glass Blowing Studio

Studio glass blowing techniques with technical information on glass compositions, furnace design, and construction.

Art 171 - Textile Design: Dyeing

Design relating to fabrics, tie dye, batik, and silk screen.

Art 175 - Jewelry and Metalsmithing

Concentrated study in glazes through the empirical methods with discussion of historical and technical integration of glazes with clay forms.

Art 182 - Introduction to Large Format Photography

Introduction to the unique aspects of the large format camera and its creative application in field assignments.

Art 183 - Field Studies in Photography

Introduction to the unique aspects of the large format camera and its creative application in field assignments.

Art 185 - Color Photography

Introduction to the unique attributes of color in the design and production of color photographic prints including multiformat printing.
