Research Interests

I am broadly interested in the ecology and systematics of parasites and their hosts. More specifically, I actively investigate host-parasite interactions, particularly parasite life history strategies and the population ecology of parasites and hosts, and the impacts of parasitism on host populations. These studies typically entail lots of fieldwork. The second major emphasis in my lab is parasite systematics and identification, using both molecular and morphological approaches.  I have no particular biases towards one group of parasites or another: I am more interested in appropriate systems that offer opportunities to ask interesting questions from an evolutionary standpoint. I have worked on protozoal endoparasites of insects, ticks (Dermacentor spp), tapeworms, and protozoans parasitizing marine mammals.  Current collaborative work involves soft ticks and the apicomplexans Sarcocystis and Toxoplasma.
