Dr. Alice Wright

My laboratory use molecular biology techniques to study the degradation of manmade chemicals and pollutants by microorganisms, specifically herbicides and components of petroleum. Results may lead to innovations in bioremediation and the genetic engineering of microorganisms to degrade persistent pollutants. Some of the questions we are asking: How does a microbial community change after exposure to a manmade compound? What are the characteristics of an environmentally friendly and effective herbicide? How do bacteria learn to degrade manmade chemicals? Where are the genes that encode the enzymes found prior to exposure to the manmade substrate? How are these genes regulated? How do the biochemical pathways for biodegradation evolve? What is the role of the regulatory elements in the evolution of catabolic pathways? Why are certain environmental pollutants more easily degraded than other compounds? Can we use what we have learned to genetically engineer microorganisms that will degrade more recalcitrant pollutants? Picture of Dr. Wright's students

This picture was taken at a recent biotechnology meeting where some of Dr. Wright's students presented posters of their research.  Above is a picture of Mireya, Jovita and Som in front of their poster.
