Biomedical and Behavioral Research Presentations

Students will be introduced to biomedical and behavioral research as a possible career choice in the Summer Bridges and summer HCOP Programs, and in the University 1 course taken by many entering minority students. During each of these programs, Dr. Attar, the RISE Undergraduate Student Coordinator, will meet with students interested in the sciences three times in one-hour blocks. The first hour will be an interactive discussion about the role biomedical and behavioral science has played in our lives. The importance of research in our society is easily illustrated by the development of antibiotics, the role of public health agencies in protection of public health, cancer therapies which have prolonged the life of cancer victims, the present and future uses of functional brain imaging, in vitro fertilization, the human genome project, gene therapy, and stem cell research. Emphasis will be placed on the potential of research to affect the lives of many people. Students will be given an assignment for the second meeting to present how science has directly affected their lives. In the second hour, the role of the research scientist will be discussed, along with career preparation and job opportunities. The contributions of a minority researcher or a woman researcher will be presented. The last session will present opportunities on our campus for science students, such as the HCOP-administered facilitation classes to help students interested in the sciences master material in the basic science classes; research projects being conducted on our campus, and the RISE program.
