Ongoing EventsOrientation to the RISE ProgramThis five-day orientation for the upper division and graduate RISE research program will be held one week before classes start when all faculty are back on campus. The orientation will reiterate the goals and elements of the program presented to them before they submitted their application to the RISE program. Each student will meet with an advisor to develop their own personal contract, which will detail what is expected of them and will include their own personal goals. The process of finding a research mentor will begin with presentations and handouts by faculty mentors Handouts will include research projects being carried out, the specific methodologies being used, specific questions being addressed and a list of references and review papers if available. Students will have meetings for the first three days, and will be given time to explore their research interests in the last two days. Students will be required to meet with several potential mentors and will report their findings at the first Friday afternoon Pathway to Success meeting.Pathway to Success Friday Afternoon MeetingsFriday afternoons from 3 to 5 P.M. will be used for a variety of activities aimed at developing the skills that will lead students to successful application to Ph.D. programs (a proposed schedule for the Pathway to Success meetings is in the appendix). These meetings will provide opportunities for students:
Dr. Saeed Attar and Dr. James Prince will conduct the undergraduate and graduate student activities, respectively. Monthly Advising MeetingsDr. Attar will meet with undergraduate students and Dr. Prince with graduate students once a month.
