Research Interests of Participating FacultyFrederick W. Zechman, Biology. The research program in this laboratory is concerned with the molecular evolution and phylogenetics of the green algae. Although previous molecular and morphology-based phylogenetic studies have elucidated some of the relationships, these studies have unfortunately been inconclusive with regard to chlorphytan phylogeny, and have further raised doubt and confusion concerning the evolution of this large and diverse group of eukaryotes. In particular, their National Science Foundation-funded research is focused on a multigene phylogeny of the Chlorophyta based on nuclear, chloroplast and mitochondrial-encoded gene sequences (e.g., large and small subunit rDNA, rbcL and nad5 genes), so that additional sources of data may be used to elucidate these issues. In particular, the laboratory is interested in marine biogeographic history of ulvophycean green algae, and the phylogenetic affinity of deep-water species. Both graduate and undergraduate students will be involved in all aspects of the research and assigned independent research projects overseen by the PI. Dr. Mark Buchheim, University of Tulsa and Dr. Marvin Fawley, North Dakota State University are collaborators in this research. |
