Your Feedback is Important to Us!

During the 2008-09 academic year, our office produced this newsletter, Career Matters, to inform you in regard to career-related activities, events, and services we offer to students and alumni.

Career Matters newsletter was developed with you in mind!  In order to improve student utilization of services and attendance during our events, we believe it is necessary for faculty and staff to make direct referrals or formal announcements during class throughout the semester.

This is the sixth edition of the Career Matters newsletter and we’d like to obtain your feedback. Please provide your comments or suggestions in regard to newsletter content, workshops and events scheduled during the semester.

Your feedback is important to us and will be considered when writing future newsletter editions.  Pease forward your comments to aletaw@csufresno.edu.

This mixer is intended to provide undergraduate and graduate students a learning environment to interact with workforce professionals from reputable private employers and public, non-profit organizations in the Central Valley.  Ms. Linda Davidson, Human Resources Recruiter from the Fresno County Economic Opportunities Commission (EOC), a non-profit organization, will provide a brief presentation on networking do’s and don’ts.

After the presentation, students will be provided an opportunity to interact with attending workforce professionals in a networking environment. Students who register online, prior to April 20th, will receive business cards to distribute during the event. Please inform students to register at our website in the Calendar section (www.csufresno.edu/careers).

Finally, student participation is essential, therefore, door prizes will be offered to students who approach and engage with professionals during the event.  Faculty and staff are welcome to attend. We ask that you register online so we have an accurate count of individuals attending. We hope to see you and your students at the networking mixer.

Career Services has developed a strong relationship with the Social Work Department, offering professional development opportunities and workshops for students.  Staff from Career Services has participated in a number of activities including presenting during the Title IV-E Master’s of Social Work program.

Hao Ho, Fresno State Liaison and Field Placement Coordinator for Social Work courses SW181 and SW188, witnessed a number of Career Services presentations.  Ms. Ho, Social Work Practitioner from the Fresno County Department of Children & Family Services, coordinates the field placement experiences as well as trains students in the classroom on how to be an effective, compassionate, and ethical social worker.  After hearing several career-related workshops, Ms. Ho saw the value of collaborating with Career Services.  Therefore, she elected to embed resume and interviewing curricula within her course work.

Hao Ho contacted Adrian Ramirez, Career Development Counselor in Career Services. Since then, Mr. Ramirez has facilitated several resume writing and interviewing skills workshops for her classes.

First and foremost, students realize the importance of illustrating the impact of their field work, course projects, and professional skills on their resume in order to proceed to the next step of obtaining a face-to-face interview.  Second, students have been trained to do the following for successful interviewing:

1. Prepare - research the organization and anticipate possible interview questions.

2. Plan - determine which skills sets are essential for the position and provide evidence of how their skills, training, volunteer and community service, and work experience make them an ideal candidate for the position.

3. Practice - write out answers, practice out loud and practice timing, intonation, and word choice through mock interviews with Career Counselors.

As a result of this partnership, Social Work students are equipped with stellar resumes and are better prepared to communicate their skills sets in a clear, concise, and compelling approach when entering the competitive work environment.  This enables them to clearly communicate their professionalism and understanding of employer expectations, thereby enhancing their career opportunities.
