The requirement for entrance to the major and minor programs is completion
of two years of algebra and courses in geometry and trigonometry, or a sequence
of courses containing their equivalents, such as MATH 4R and 5.
It is strongly recommended that such study be completed before entrance
to the university.

The requirement for entrance to the graduate program is completion of
undergraduate preparation equivalent to a California State University, Fresno
major in mathematics.

Prior to advancement to candidacy, the candidate must pass the department's
Graduate Qualifying Exam. This exam is given in two parts: analysis and
algebra.

The Department of Mathematics offers a master's degree in Mathematics (M.A.) and a master's degree in Mathematics with a Teaching Option. Both the M.A. and the Mathematics with a Teaching Option have the same admission requirements: completion of undergraduate preparation equivalent to a California State University, Fresno major in mathematics. Candidates are also required to submit current GRE scores. (See Division of Graduate Studies admission requirements.)
The M.A. is designed for students who wish to study mathematics at an advanced level and who wish to work in industry, teach community college, or go on to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics. The Mathematics with a Teaching Option is designed for students who wish to enhance their high school mathematics teaching and/or assume a leadership role in high school mathematics education.
