Alumni Association. The unofficial beginning of the Fresno State Alumni Association dates back to the first Fresno Normal School graduating class of 1912. An informal group of alumni would meet frequently to discuss how they could serve their school. Their association was founded upon mutual respect, motivation toward community service, pride in one's alma mater, and genuine concern for the school's future.
The Fresno State Alumni Association was incorporated in 1940 to promote higher education; encourage communication among alumni, friends, and former students; and support bilateral exchange and participation between community and university.
More than 140,000 Fresno State graduates have migrated to every state in the nation; many have located abroad. The university maintains database records of more than 100,000 alumni and friends of the university. Annual members number approximately 3,500 and Life members number approximately 1,600.
The Alumni Association is governed by a 25-member board of
volunteers who represent all schools and colleges of the university
as well as students, staff, and faculty. The university president
and the vice president for University Advancement each have a
position on the Board of Directors.
Membership. Membership is open to students, graduates and friends of the university. Annual dues are $25 for students and new graduates, $35 for single membership, and $55 for joint membership. Single life membership is $600 and joint life memberships are $750. Dues- paying members receive The Column, an informative quarterly newsletter published by the Alumni Association.
Academic and Regional Chapters. The Alumni Association has several chapters. There are three main categories of alumni chapters -- geographic, academic and special interest. These alumni chapters sponsor programs, workshops, reunions, and activities for their constituents. Membership in one chapter is included in membership dues.
Scholarships. Fresno State students may apply for Alumni Scholarships through the Scholarship Office. Awards are made to undergraduate and graduate students based on need, scholarship, leadership, and involvement. The Alumni Trust Council oversees the investment of the Alumni Association's contributions and the distribution of its scholarship funds.
Events and Programs. The Alumni Association also co-hosts
various events and programs throughout the year including: the
Annual Homecoming Tailgate, Vintage Days Beer Garden, Grad Sales,
and the Golden Grad Society Dinner, which honors those who have
celebrated their 50th reunion from Fresno State. The Alumni Association
also sponsors the photographs taken at each commencement. Graduates
are individually photographed, free of charge, before the ceremony
processional each May.
