The 2001-2002 General Catalog
As we embark upon a new century, California State University, Fresno is uniquely poised to provide a quality education to our students. Two years ago we established the university's new Smittcamp Family Honors College, a program that combines the best of a small liberal arts college experience with the advantages of a large public university. We also implemented a new General Education program to provide our students with an outstanding academic foundation. At Fresno State, our number one priority is to enhance the quality of the learning environment we provide for our students.
Engagement with our community and region is also one of our top priorities. We have more than 30 academic centers and institutes that provide applied research and service to our community. In addition, our students are leading the way in community service, contributing over 25,000 hours a year to the needs of others in our region. Through service learning courses and our Students for Community Service program, our students are making a significant difference in the lives of the residents of this region. Students are also engaged in internships, cooperative learning experiences, and other initiatives that allow them to contribute their skills and experiences to our community.
This year we are in the process of reviewing our current strategic plan, "Vision for the 21st Century: A Plan for Excellence." The Plan for Excellence guides us as we move forward to meet ever new challenges. Our current plan includes new instructional delivery systems, partnerships will all levels of education, greater reliance on non-state sources of support, more efficient use of our facilities, commitment to graduate education, and increasing opportunities for learning in our diverse community. During your time at Fresno State, you will benefit from all of these changes.
The General Catalog reflects the university's ongoing commitment to academic excellence. This tradition will continue to grow as we actively recruit highly qualified students and continue to build our new honors program. The university will continue to offer a breadth of study that includes degrees at the bachelor's and master's levels and at the doctoral level in educational leadership. Students from all walks of life, of many ethnicities, of both sexes, and of all economic levels participate in the Fresno State learning experience as they strive to meet the challenges of the new millennium.
This is an exciting time to be a student at California State University, Fresno. Our faculty, staff and administrators are all committed to your success.
President John Welty
