The Learning Resource Center. The center is a place where students become more autonomous, self-directed learners who can assume greater responsibility for their own learning. We want to assist students in moving from rote memorization and a pass-the-test model of studying to a problem posing, learning, and thinking model. In addition to tutoring services detailed on this page, the center offers workshops and handouts on how to improve learning skills in areas such as time management, textbook reading, note taking, test preparation, memorization, learning styles, and stress reduction/relaxation. A learning strategies course is available to students interested in focused study on how to improve performance in college.

Services to faculty include classroom presentations, assistance in forming study groups for students, arrangements for supplemental instruction tutoring in high risk classes, consultation on how to incorporate learning skills into the curriculum, and collaborative research on student success issues.

University Tutorial Services. Free tutoring is available to enrolled Fresno State students. Drop-in tutoring is generally available in mathematics, statistics, physics, accounting, and American Sign Language. Writing tutors are available to work with students on papers assigned from any academic discipline. English as a second language writing tutors are available to assist students whose primary language is not English. Peer academic consultants are available on a drop-in basis. They can assist students with a variety of academic questions and problems. They can also help students interpret class assignments and develop learning skill techniques. High demand subject tutoring is available in small groups of three or more students per tutor meeting one hour per week.

Tutors are faculty recommended and must participate in a tutor-training program prior to employment. Continuing professional development is provided and expected. The LRC is able to offer national tutor certification at three levels through the College Reading and Learning Association.

Evening tutoring is generally available in mathematics and writing several days each week. Please call or visit our Web page for drop-in tutoring times, workshop schedules, evening hours, applications, and other information about the center.

The Intensive Learning Experience (ILE) Program. ILE provides academic assistance to freshmen scoring at or below the lower quartile on the EPT (T141 and E7) and or the ELM (30 or below). Assistance includes individual learning assessment, advising and counseling, and tutoring. ILE partially supports courses offered through the departments of English (English 1), linguistics (ESL 20 and 30), mathematics (Math 1RA and 1RB) and literacy and early education (LEE AR). ILE's mission is to increase the retention and graduation rates of historically under-represented and under-prepared college students.

Course

The following course is offered by various departments in cooperation with the LRC and its associated programs. English as a Second Language and Academic Learning Strategies courses count as elective credit toward graduation.
