The Learning Resource Center. At the LRC students become more autonomous, self-directed learners who can assume greater responsibility for their own learning. We want to assist students in moving from rote memorization and a "pass the test" model of studying to a problem-posing, learning, and thinking model.
In addition to our tutoring services, the LRC offers workshops, handouts and individual appointments on how to improve learning skills in areas such as
- time management
- textbook reading
- note taking
- test preparation
- memorization
- learning styles
- stress reduction and relaxation techniques.
University Tutorial Services. Free tutoring is available to all currently enrolled Fresno State students.
Drop-in tutoring is available in many subject areas including mathematics, statistics, physics, accounting, foreign languages, computer science, chemistry, biology, and others.
Writing tutors are available to work with students on papers assigned from any academic discipline.
English as a second language writing tutors are available to work with students whose primary language is not English.
General education tutors assist students with a variety of academic questions and problems in most lower-division courses. They also assist students to interpret class assignments and develop independent learning techniques.
Study groups can be arranged in small groups of three or more students per tutor. They meet at least one hour per week.
Tutors are faculty recommended and must participate in a tutor training program prior to employment. Continuing professional development is provided and expected. The LRC is able to offer national tutor certification at three levels through the College Reading and Learning Association.
Evening tutoring is available on a per semester basis as needed. Call or visit our Web page for tutoring times, workshop schedules, applications, and other information about the LRC.
The Intensive Learning Experience (ILE) Program. ILE provides academic assistance to freshmen scoring at or below the lower quartile on the EPT (T141 and E7) and/or the ELM (30 or below).
Assistance includes individual learning assessment, academic counseling, and tutoring. ILE partially supports basic skills courses offered through the departments of English, Linguistics, Mathematics, and Literacy and Early Education. The mission of ILE is to increase the retention and graduation rates of under-prepared college students.
Course. University 20, a three unit learning strategies course, is available to students interested in focused study on how to improve academic performance. UNIV 20 counts as an elective toward graduation.
Services to Faculty. LRC staff are available to conduct classroom
presentations on learning skills, provide assistance in forming study groups
for students, give specialized tutoring in high risk classes, consult with
on how to incorporate learning skills into the curriculum, and furnish collaborative
research on student success.
