University Lecture Series

The University Lecture Series (ULS) brings distinguished scholars, performers, and public figures to California State University, Fresno. ULS programs stimulate and enhance the intellectual climate of the university and surrounding communities.
Featured speakers have included political activist and leader of the American Indian Movement Russell Means, legendary White House reporter Helen Thomas, Harvard Law Professor Randall Kennedy, poet Philip Levine, and professor of astronomy and anthropologyAnthony Aveni.
A program of the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic
Affairs, the Lecture Series receives additional funding from Coke and
James Hallowell, the University Student Union, Associated Students, Inc.,

Russell Means
A political activist and leader of the American Indian Movement,
Russell Means led the Indian insurrection at Wounded Knee in 1973.
He has portrayed the pride of his people with his roles
in The Last of the Mohicans, Natural Born Killers, and Wind Runner.

Helen Thomas
Legendary reporter Helen Thomas is known for her coverage
of news from the White House.
She was the only print journalist who travelled with President Richard Nixon
when he visited China in 1972. She has also accompanied five presidents
in their travels around the world and covered every economic summit.
World Almanac named Thomas one of the most influential women in America
in the 1970s.

Anthony Aveni
A lecturer, speaker, author, and editor of more than two
dozen books
on ancient astronomy, Anthony Aveni is considered one of the founders
of Mesoamerican archaeoastronomy. He is well known
for his research in Mayan Indian astronomical history.

Philip Levine
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1995 for The Simple Truth,
Levine taught literature and creative writing at California State University,
Fresno from 1958-92.

Randall Kennedy
A Harvard law professor, Kennedy is the author of the book
he describes as a "reminder of the ironies and dilemmas,
the tragedies and glories, of the American experience."
