Avtar Nijjer-Sidhu Ph.D., R.D.
Community Health Capacity Building Specialist
Avtar Nijjer-Sidhu is the Community Health Capacity Building Specialist for Kern County. As a Community Health Capacity Building Specialist, she works at building the internal capacity of the public health department to respond to the obesity epidemic.
In addition, Nijjer-Sidhu works in partnership with Get Moving Kern, the local CCROPP community partner, at improving local environments for healthy eating and active living. Avtar has experience in clinical and community nutrition as well as research. She previously worked as a dietitian for three years for the Clinica Sierra Vista WIC Program in Bakersfield.
Nijjer-Sidhu received both her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and her Doctorate in Nutrition from the University of California, Davis. She completed her dietetic internship at Barnes Hospital affiliated with Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri. Avtar's doctoral research focused on the development of a nutrition education video and handouts for adolescent Hispanic women focusing on the physiological and dietary needs of folate, calcium, iron, and zinc.
